Mankle, Jacob, 18 Jul 1840 - 17 Mar 1923: #410 on veteran's list - Civil War - died Mar 17, 1923: obit - Jacob Mankle, one of our old and highly respected citizens passed to the great beyond on Saturday afternoon at his home in New Market. He had been in failing health for a number of years and some three weeks ago he was taken with an attack of the flu and his weakened physical condition could not withstand its ravages. Jacob Mankle was a man in all the name implies. Clean in mind and body he followed closely the Golden Rule in his dealings with his fellowmen. His passing will be sincerely mourned by all who knew him. Funeral services were held at his late home Tuesday morning at eleven o'clock, conducted by Rev J. Owen Smith, and the remains were laid away in Dallas Center Cemetery. Jacob Mankle was born in Germany July 18, 1840, where he grew to manhood and came to America in 1859, and settled in Peoria co, Il. In 1862 he enlisted in Co E 77 Ill Inf volunteers and served until the close of the war, 14 months of that time being spent in a confederate prison at Tyler, Texas, as a prisoner of war. He was united in marriage to Mary J. Hemphill, Dec 26, 1866. To this union were born 5 children who all survive. In 1874, he came to Iowa, first settling in Essex, then on a farm 4 1/2 miles northeast of New Market then removing to New Market where he resided to the end of life. He confessed faith in Christ and united with the Methodist Church in whose communion he remained faithful to the end. For several years Brother Mankle was in failing health and 3 weeks ago he had an attack of inlfuenza which with other complications caused his decease March 17, 1923, at the age of 82 years, 7 months, and 29 days. He leaves to mourn their loss 4 sons and 1 daughter as follows: John D. and Florence J. Mankle of New Market, C.C. of Topeka,Ks, George of Chicago, Il, Edwin L. of New Market.
