He was the 6th child in a family of nine. He came with a younger brother in 1880 to Taylor county and also lived in Page and Adams cos, for 6 years he lived at Alton, Kansas. He was married Apr 15, 1885 to Vida Williams at the bride's home near New Market and to them were born 8 children. He was a member of the Methodist Church at Hawleyville.

Hurst, Bessie, metal marker, Athelstan cem: obit - d 1915 (BFP 13 Jul 1915) MRS HERMAN HIRST DIES - Mrs Herman Hirst of Tabor [Fremont co, Iowa], the woman who was so badly burned, died Saturday at 3 p.m., just two weeks from the date of the accident, which was caused by rekindling a fire in her cook stove by the pouring on of coal oil. The conflagration that followed burned up the farm house and her baby.

The body was taken to Athelston, Taylor county [Iowa], for burial near her former home. Mr Hirst and one 3 years old child survive her. The Hamburg Reporter, [Hamburg, Iowa] July 9, 1915
