There was also a Col. John H. Davis, born in 1817 in Pike Co., Ohio, lived in Ross Co., and remained there until 1860. " He was in the Ohio State Legislature in 1854. He located on land that was in the corporation of Burlington Junction and was founder of the Ohio settlement, which figures conspicuously in this vicinity, a settlement consisting of over 60 families". Nodaway Twp., Nodaway Co., MO biographical. "Andrew and Nodaway Counties, MO were family gathering places." Sent by Bob Christensen: HISTORY OF NODAWAY CO., MISSOURI pub 1882, page 648: "Joshua Davis farmer and stock raiser, section 25, post office Gaynor City. Although not an old settler of this county, is nevertheless one of our representative farmers. He is a native of Pike County, Ohio and was born in 1811. He was there raised to manhood and remained in that vicinity until 1856, when he emigrated to Iowa, and settled in Decatur County. After a long residence there he removed to this state and county where he now resides. He has 160 acres of land that will compare favorably with any in this county all of which is under cultivation. Mr. davis has been twice married; first to Elizabeth Holton. They had by this union eight children: Jacob, Joshua, John, Mary A., Rachel, Isaac, Julia and Jane. Mrs. Davis' death occurred in 1867. after a lapse of two years or in 1869 he married Miss J. Jewett. They have four children: Branson, Miranda, Adel, Alice. NODAWAY INDEPENDENT, 12 Dec 1878, page 2: Joshua Davis, Sr. has a farm of 160 acres. Had 145 acres of crib. Has a agood large house under which is a large cellar walled with stone. He has a young orchard of 165 trees, 100 grapes and some cherries and ornamental trees. Mr. Davis has two teams, 18 head of cattle and 20 fat hogs. NODAWAY INDEPENDENT, (no date given) (son of Joseph Sr. above) Joshua Davis, Jr. has a farm of 80 acres all inproved. Has a young orchard out and also some grapes. He had 75 acres of corn and some oats. Has one team and other stock.
