Where to Find the State Census Microfilms

    Family History Centers

    Iowa territorial and state censuses supplemented the federal censuses which began in 1840 and continued every ten years. The earlier census records are hit and miss for years and counties available and many are not filmed but are available to order in book form.

    Look under Iowa in the microfiche locality card catalog, then under census records. The following are filmed and are available to order from a Family History Center:

    • 1885 census
    • 1895 census
    • 1905 census (catalog warns this is hard to read)
    • 1915 census (is filmed on 16mm with high reduction 42x filming and needs a high magnification reader to read)
    • 1925 census (is done by townships, this census lists names,relationships, sex, age, marital status and parents' names)
