Subject: Death at the courthouse?

Query: My grandmother told a story of when she was a young single lady, she was working in the Harlan County courthouse (as a secretary I think) and worked for a city official (possibly mayor?) who died in office at the courthouse. Very few details are known about her story but it is thought she was the one who discovered the deceased. The time frame was most likely the early 1930's. After her passing in 1998 a locket was found with a picture of an unknown man and we suspect this may be the same person. Do you know of any story that confirms this and provides more details?

Name: Steve
Subject: John F. Hill
Surnames:
Query: SInce the email didn't work for the person inquiring about the John F. Hill family on November 7, 2005, here is what I found: I saw your inquiry at the Shelby County Gen Web site. I was unable to find any mention of him or Labana Hill in the WPA Cemetery records for Shelby County. I did check the records for Cass County (directly south of Shelby County) and found nothing there. I then checked the WPA Cemetery records for Audubon County (directly east of Shelby County) and I found a John F. Hill buried in Exira Cemetery, Exira. The date of birth of John F. Hill is 12-27-1831 and date of death was 6-12-1915. Buried on the same lot as John, is Elizabeth Hill, born 3-31-1834 and date of death was 5-19-1928. Both are buried in Block I, Lot 31. Also buried in Exira Cemetery (no Block or Lot given) is: Elizabeth Hill. The middle initial is hard to read and might be a capital letter H but appears to be: II
This Elizabeth Hill had the birth year of 1856 and a death year of 1933. No other information for any of them and no other Hill family listed in the WPA Cemetery records for Audubon County. I don't know if this is the right Hill family that you are seeking but it was all that I could find. Hope it is of some help to you.

Subject: Looking for more info on Green families
Surnames: Green, Peffer, Waltenburg- many more
Query: David Green b: 2/29/2776 PA, d: 5/6/1867 buried in married to Mary Waltenburg d: 7/5/1872 Both are buried in N. Liberty, Johnson county IA. Some of their descendants moved to Shelby County. (a distant cousin) IE: DAVID W. GREEN is a native of the State that has furnished so many substantial citizens to Shelby County; that is, Pennsylvania. He was born in Cumberland County, August 7, 1844, and is a son of John and Elizabeth (Allen) Green, also natives of Pennsylvania. David was four years old when his parents removed to Johnson County, Iowa, which is still their home. He passed his youth upon a farm, and obtained his education in the common schools of the day. During the late civil war he enlisted in the Forty-seventh Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Company G, and served four months in the western army, and was honorably discharged. Mr. Green was united in marriage September 13, 1868, to Miss Margaret Alloway, born in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, and a daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Anderson) Green. After his marriage Mr. Green resided in Johnson County until 1881, when he came to Shelby County and bought his present farm; it was wild land, but he has placed it under cultivation and erected good buildings. He has a modern windmill, and many conveniences for farming and stock- raising. Mr. and Mrs. Green have had born to them four children -- Lizzie May, wife of William Horton; William Henry, lona Grace and John Irvin. He and his wife are members of the Church of God, he serving as one of the ruling elders. In politics he supports the principles of the Republican party. Source: 1889 Biographical History of Shelby County, Iowa, pp. 596. Thank-you in advance for any help you can provide!

Subject: Irene, Adeliah, Almeda Hill
Surnames: John and Labana Hill
Query: I know that my ggrandmother, Irene Hill, was born in IA in 1854. She also had 2 other sisters born in IA in the years of 1857 and 1858. Her parent were John and Labana Hill, who were living in IA between the years of 1854 and 1858 which is most difficult, as that time frame does not fall on a Federal Census year. They were living in Shelby Co. Indiana in 1850, and in MO, I believe in Harrison Co. MO, in 1860. One of the descendants of my ggrandmother's sisters, who was one of the sisters born in IA, I mentioned, says that her ggrandmother, Adeliah Hill, was born in Shelby Co. IA. However, I was thinking she might have been conrused, due to the fact that they lived in Shelby Co. Indiana, between the years of 1849 and 1853, where they had 3 of their older daughters. At any rate, I was wondering if there might be a 1854 or 1856 State Census of Shelby Co. IA? Any hlep in this matter would be appreciated!

Subject: W.J. JOHNSTON re: CUPPY and JOHNSTON Feud
Surnames: JOHNSTON, WEST
Query: I am quite interested in the CUPPY and JOHNSTON Feud found on the Shelby County History Page. I believe I am a descendant of W.J. Johnston. > W.J. Johnston > Mary, daughter, age 24, teacher, born Ohio (married Henry West on February 28, 1875) > Harry West son? b.?d.? (Married Edna Winans, buried Odebolt, IA) > Ardith Fern (West) North b. 1922 d. 2000 (married James W. North. buried Vail, IA). > James C. North (ME) My mother spoke of the blood feud between the Cuppy's and the Johnstons. Her story follows that W.J. Johnston was killed while peeling potatoes near his root cellar in retaliation for vigilante justice involving a Cuppy or an associate who was accused of molesting a woman. The subject of the vigilante justice was lynched from a bridge. In addition the family story goes that one of W.J. Johnston’s sons was killed while on the way home from Council Bluffs by a band of renegade Indians (official account). Mom’s story claims it was really a member of the Cuppy family, who she claimed was involved with the (Jessie) James gang. I know very little of this side of my family, I am not even sure if Henry (Mary’s husband) is my great-grandfather. Any information on the “West” side of my family would be appreciated.

Subject: James L. Hall
Surnames: HALL, YALES
Query: James L. Hall is the youngest son and brother of my ancestors. His parents names are listed in your 1889 Biographical History of Shelby County, Iowa. I am wondering if you might have the original submittal of these stories. There is an error in the spelling of James fathers name. The website shows Alvin and I know it to be Albon. I have looked for information on Albon's wife Philantha and this article is the only record I can find with her maiden name. I have a distant cousin that believes her maiden name is Sayles. I was hoping that if you have the original submission of these stories, it might be a hand written document that I could buy a copy of. It could be that the parents names were misinterpreted. I know that on the 1850 Mortality Census it lists Philantha as born in New York. I also know that Albon was born in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. Any information you could supply me would be greatly appreciated.
