Emma was an unmarried woman, residing in Audobon County, who gave her son up for adoption to Martin R. Shultz of Cass County. The adoption took place 09/10/1863 at Audobon. The only information that I have about the natural father of this child, later named William Henry Shultz, is that he was a soldier stationed at Ft. Donaldson Tennessee and that he was killed in the turmoil preceeding the civil war probably in 1860. His name may have been Millhollin. Emma Howlett later married Sid Mackey an lived and died at Rose Creek NE.

Query: my grandparents, the taylors, farmed near Harlan in 1886 and perhaps some before that on a rented farm. Jasper left for Colorado (gold fever) in 1888. My mother's birth was never registered and I think that there might have been other babies lost before she was born as they were married 12 years before my mother was born. I know he sold the team and farm stuff before he left. They were Methodists. Any information or lead will be appreciated.

Query: My mother, a former resident of the Elim Children's Home in Poplar, Iowa, just found the page for the orphanage in the 1933 Census. If anyone would like a pdf copy of the information gleaned from the page, we would be happy to forward it by e-mail. A photocopy of isn't practical, as we had to enlarge the page so much to read it, that it is 4 pages wide.
