MISSOURI VALLEY - Dorothy L. Allmon, 86, of Missouri Valley died Nov. 2 at the Longview Care Center in Missouri Valley.

She was born in Missouri Valley on Dec. 23, 1915, to Charles and Mabel (Nelson) Deal. She graduated from Missouri Valley High School. She taught for a time in a rural school. She married Max Allmon on May 7, 1937, in Onawa. They farmed until retiring to Missouri Valley in 1974. She was active in the Church of Christ and Eastern Star.

Survivors include seven sons, Robert and wife, Paula, of Omaha, Richard and wife, Maxine, of Woodbine, Clifford and wife, Anita, of Moorhead, Charles and wife, Cindy, of Harlan, Jerry of Laredo, Texas, Dean and wife, Judy, of Manning, Tom of Mondamin and Michael and wife, Julie, of Missouri Valley; three daughters, Elizabeth Neese and husband, Allen, of Missouri Valley, Mary Arp and husband, Stan, of Omaha and Judy Fox and husband, Don, of Spokane, Wash.; one brother, Gerald Deal of Missouri Valley; one sister, Virginia Morgan of Lakewood, Calif.; 29 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one aunt; nieces and nephews.

An Eastern Star Service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Hennessey-Aman Funeral Home in Missouri Valley. Visitation with the family will follow.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Church of Christ in Missouri Valley with the Rev. Ron Wymer officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Missouri Valley.

Lucile Marie Cline, 70, of Council Bluffs died Nov. 20 at Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Persia to Edwin and Bernadine (Stein) Martens. She previously lived in Persia. She moved to Council Bluffs in 1965. She was a homemaker and a member of Salvation Army Church and its Home League.

Mrs. Cline was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie P. Cline, on Feb. 20, 1984, and by her son, Donald Wood and stepson, Ray Cline.

Survivors include two daughters, Jennie Evans and husband, Dan, of Marceline, Mo., and Barbie Dofner and husband, Paul, of Council Bluffs; one son, Mark Wood, of Newton; one stepdaughter, Juanita Delong, of Omaha; eight sisters, Jacqueline Osborn and husband, Clifford, of Naper, Neb., Marvelene Stasny and husband, John, of Omaha, Barbara Pieper and husband, Duane, and Madge Bargenquast and husband, Donald, all of Neola, Margie Cline and husband,  James, of Atlantic, Connie Snyder and husband, Jerome, of Westphalia, Pam Gilbert and husband, Frank, of Leavenworth, Kan., and Jolene Wiesner of Omaha; four brothers, Bill Martens of Omaha, Darrold Martens and wife, Joyce, and Jerry all of Neola and Phillip Martens of Shelby; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Visitation with the family will be Friday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. The funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Salvation Army Church with Capt. Joel Arthur of the Salvation Army officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery in Persia with lunch following at Salvation Army.

Memorials may be offered to the Salvation Army.

Virgil A. Hast

Virgil A. Hast was born in Defiance December 30, 1920, the son of August and Emma Nollen Hast. He died Friday, October 4, 2002, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of eighty-one.

Virgil received his education in the Arion and Dow City schools. After completing his education, he farmed for a short time and then joined the CC Camp in the area for awhile before moving to California where he worked at an aircraft company. In March of 1943, Virgil joined the Army Air Corps as an airplane electrical specialist assigned to the 355th Bomb Squadron.

August 16, 1944, Virgil was united in marriage to Ferne Ridgley at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township. The couple were blessed with the birth of five children. Alter a short leave, he served his country during WWII, assigned to the Western Pacific Theater and was involved with the Air offensive over Japan. He was decorated with the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Ribbon and the APT Ribbon. He was honorably discharged from the Army Air Corps in March of 1946 and returned to Crawford County where he farmed in the Wall Lake area until 1967. In 1961, he began his employment at Farmland Foods, Inc. and continued farming until 1967 when he moved to Dow City. Virgil retired from Farmland Foods in 1982.

Virgil had a positive view of life, and was always happy. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing at Pierre, S.D., with his sons, other family and friends; watching Chicago Cubs baseball and the Minnesota Vikings football teams; gardening, feeding the birds and socializing at Ace's over a game of cards. He remained very active with his children and enjoyed helping them at farming. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the American Legion Post 444 all of Dow City.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Joan Keairnes in 1982 and two brothers, August Jr. (Fritz) and Gayle.

Survivors include his wife, Ferne of Dow City; three sons, David and his wife Marcia of Sioux City, Dean and his wife Lisa of St. Paul, N.C., Lynn and his wife Sheri of Dow City; one daughter, Karen Muff and her husband Tom of Dow City; twenty-two grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren; four sisters, Phyllis (Molly) Hummel and her husband Norman of Schleswig, Doris Auen and her husband Arnold of Denison, Shirley Hollrah and her husband Kenneth of Chadron, Neb., Betty Greder and her husband Keith of Denison; one brother, Vernon and his wife Delores of Denison and one sister-in-law, Darlene Hast of Denison.

Funeral services were held Monday, October 7, 2002, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City. Rev. Gordon Buchholz officiated at the 2 p.m. service. Service music was provided by EveVonne Muff and service hymns included "Amazing Grace," "How Sweet the Sound," "How Great Thou Art," and "On Eagles Wings."

Interment was made at Dow City Cemetery in Dow City. Military honors were provided by American Legion Post 444 of Dow City. Pallbearers were Mike Keairnes, Jeff Keairnes, Jeremy Muff, Chad Muff, Jason Hast, Justin Hast, Tom Hast, Bill Hast, Sean Hast, Chris Hast.

PANAMA - Donald L. Leuschen was born to Elizabeth (Thielen) and Nicholas C. Leuschen Feb. 6, 1924, on a farm east of Panama. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church and attended St. mary's Catholic School in Panama. He was a member of the St. Mary's High Schol Graduating Class of 1941.


Jan. 9. 1945, he married Bernadine Blum at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Panama. To this union seven children were born. He farmed the family farm until his retirement. A lifetime memder of St. Mary's, he served as a member of the Parish Council and also the St. Mary's School Board. Donald died Oct. 5, 2002, at the Life Care Center of Omaha in Omaha, NE, at age 78 years, seven months and 29 days.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bernadine, Sept. 5, 2002; son, Robert Leuschen, Dec. 2, 1947; sisters, Rita Leuschen, Hilda Fahn and Henrietta Schilz; and brothers, Urban and Nicholas Leuschen.

 

He is survived by his children, Shirley (Ed) Arkfeld of Omaha, NE; Kate (Jim) Musich of Bedford; Jan (Bob) Wilson of Omaha, NE; Jean (Wayne) Hodapp of Denver, CO; Doug Leuschen of Omaha, NE; and Beth (Hank) Stueve of Phoenix, AZ; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; sisters and brother, Marie Coenen of Harlan; Helen Bieker of Harlan and John Leuschen of Panama; nieces and nephews and other relatives.

WOODBINE - Charles R. Mohn, 54, of Irwin died Dec. 12 at his home.

Mr. Mohn was born in Moorhead on April 22, 1948, to Walter and Rachel (Stoley) Mohn. He graduated from West Harrison High School in 1966. He served in the Vietnam War with the U.S. Army. He was employed at various companies that included Harlan Manufacturing Co., IBP and, most recently, as a truck driver and mechanic at Omni Engineering in Omaha. He married Connie Ellison in 1968 and Cindy Black in 1985.

Survivors in addition to his wife include five children, Tina Schwert and husband, Louie, of Woodbine, Terry Mohn of Woodbine, Misty Pool and husband, Phillip, of Wiota, Tiffany Mohn and fiance, Calvin Hopkins of Harlan and Matthew Mohn of Irwin; one brother, Soloman and wife, Connie, of Woodbine; his mother; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation is today with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Fouts Funeral Home in Woodbine.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Woodbine with the Rev. Ted Sieck officiating. Burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery.

HARLAN - The funeral for Franklin Gregory Oppold, 87, of Dunlap will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael G. Peters officiating.

Mr. Oppold died Nov. 17 at Dunlap Care Center.

He was born in Panama. He was a graduate of St. Mary's High School in Panama. He served in the Army Corp of Engineers during World War II. He was proprietor of a hardware and lumber store. He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. He was a former mayor and member of Panama Town Council and Panama Citizen of the Year in 1971. He was an adjutant of American Legion post No. 601 of Panama.

Mr. Oppold and his wife, Genevieve, were married 60 years.

Survivors in addition to his wife include three daughters, Patricia Leuschen of Omaha, Helen "Beth" Muenchrath of Des Moines and Alice West and husband, Earl, of Ashland, Neb.; two sons, Timothy of Panama and Franklin and wife, Joanne, of Dunlap; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

DEFIANCE - Anthony Joseph Schaben, son of Anton P. and Edith (Kobold) Schaben, was born Feb. 24, 1931, in Earling. He was baptized at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling and was confirmed at St. Peter's Church in Defiance. He attended country school before attending St. Paul's High School in Defiance, where he graduated with the class of 1949. He was affectionately known to friends and family as "Junior".


April 17, 1952, he married Ella Mae Zimmerman at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth. Nine children were born to this union. After their marriage, they farmed six miles northwest of Defiance and this is where they lived until 1993, when they moved to Defiance and became members of St. Peter's Catholic Church. While farming in this area, Tony and his family were members of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Buck Grove. In 1965, he became a sales representative for the Moorman Manufacturing Company until his retirement in 1985. After retirement, they started Ellie Mae's Popcorn Company. In 1995, Tony and Ella Mae sold the popcorn manufacturing plant to Snappy Popcorn where they continued to run the operation until 1997. After selling Ellie Mae's Popcorn, both Tony and Ella Mae retired for two years before starting to work at Variety Distributor's in Harlan. And this has been his employment until the time of his death. He was also a 3rd Degree Member of the Earling Council No. 1741, Knights of Columbus. He died Nov. 9, 2002, at the Creighton University Hospital in Omaha, NE, at age 71 years, eight months and 16 days.


In addition to his parents, Tony was preceded in death by his daughter, Marie Barbara Schaben; his brother, Robert Schaben; and his half-brother, Mal Schaben. DEFIANCE - Robert James Schaben, son of Anton and Edith (Kobold) Schaben, was born Nov. 12, 1929, in Earling. He attended school at St. Paul's Catholic School in Defiance. He received his brokerage license and worked for R. G. Dickenson in Carroll, and later operated his own office at the Dunlap Sale Barn in Dunlap.


Feb. 7, 1949, he married Ardith Henkelman at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance. Eight children were born to this union. Following their marriage, the couple located on a farm near Defiance and remained there until 1970, when they moved into Defiance where he continued to farm, retiring in 1993. He was a lifetime member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance.

 

Robert died Oct. 25, 2002, at Myrtue Memorial Hospital at age 72 years, 11 months and 14 days.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ardith, and Stepbrother, Mal Schaben.

Thomson, Clyde W. - obit Sept. 20, 1923-Nov. 17, 2002

Clyde W. Thomson

Clyde Winston Thomson, son of Howard and Myrtle (Knudsen) Thomson, was born September 20, 1923 near Harlan in Monroe Township, Shelby County.

His great-grandparents and several grandparents emigrated from Denmark. Clyde attended rural school, Monroe #4, through the eighth grade and then graduated from Harlan High School in 1941.

After high school, Clyde worked in construction for his uncle and then for a short time at Kaiser Shipyards in Richmond, Calif. He then returned to Iowa and worked with his father on the farm.

On October 10, 1948, Clyde was united in marriage with Betty Wooster at the Merrill's Grove Baptist Church in Fiscus. Five children were born to this union. The family made their home in Harlan for a short time where Clyde worked in masonry, plastering and cement work. In 1952 they moved to the Manilla area where he began farming for himself. In 1972, he became a representative for Vermeer Manufacturing Company, selling and servicing Vermeer haying equipment in addition to farming.

Clyde saw his need of accepting Christ into his life at an early age. His desire was to serve his Savior and live a life according to Christian principles. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Manning where he taught Sunday School for 30 years. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, the Farm Service Coop of which he was a board member for fifteen years, the Manilla School Board for nine years, and the West Central Iowa Healthcare Foundation Board. He was also a board member of a lumberyard in Harlan and Manilla for a number of years. Clyde enjoyed collecting stamps, fishing and traveling to see his children and grandchildren.

Clyde's health had been fragile for several years before his death Sunday morning, November 17, 2002, while getting in his car at his home to go to church. He was 79 years, 1 month and 28 days of age.

Besides his parents, Clyde is preceded in death by a son, James Thomson in 1968 and a brother, Bruce Thomson.

He is survived by his wife Betty Thomson of Manilla; four daughters, Marcia and husband Gregg Lanzen of Goshen, Ind., Julie and husband Carl Hall of Thornton, Colo., Kristi and husband Bryan Troyer of Glade, Kan., and Sara and husband Phillip Stracke of Manilla; 19 grandchildren; two sisters, Carolyn Thomson of Lawrence, Kan., and Dorothy and husband Dewey Linden of Elk Horn; sister-in-law, Margaret (Thomson) and husband Bob Ferguson of Liberty, Mo., and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday, November 21, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Manning with Pastor Greggary Lanzen of First Baptist Church in Goshen, Ind., and Pastor Louis Miller, Retired, officiating.

Music included a medley of songs by David Lanzen on the saxophone, "Thy Word" by Clyde's grandchildren, "How Great Thou Art" by the congregation and Marcia Lanzen on the piano.

Interment was made at Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla. Casketbearers were Scott Lanzen, David Lanzen, Nathan Lanzen, Jeffery Lanzen, Jordon Troyer, Tyson Troyer, Ryan Hall, Reid Stracke, Grant Stracke. Honorary casketbearers were Jim Nelson, John Long, Robert Lohrmann, Dale McCone, Herman Meiners, Sam Roberts, Bernard Stracke. Ohde Funeral Home of Manilla was in charge of arrangements.

HARLAN -- Ambrose Anthony Thraen, 89, Harlan, died Thursday, Oct. 10 at Myrtue Memorial Hospital, Harlan.


Services were held Monday, Oct. 14 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church with burial in the St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia.


Thraen is survived by sons Ron (Linda) Thraen of Harlan and Don (Rosemary) Thraen of Harlan; brother LaVern (Iona) Thraen of Omaha; and sister Josephine Rial of Omaha.

Wessel, Douglas Steven - obit Jan. 14, 1980-Dec. 4, 2002

Douglas Steven Wessel

Douglas Steven Wessel was born January 14, 1980, in Onawa, the son of Steven and Patricia Ann (Mahlberg) Evers Wessel. He grew up in the Ute area and graduated from Charter Oak-Ute High School with the class of 1998.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force briefly, serving until being discharged for health reasons. He returned home where he helped his Dad on the farm, ran a custom baling operation, and started a cow herd. Doug purchased a small farm in the spring of 2002 and had two other farms rented for next year. When not farming, he also worked for CBC Construction.

Doug was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ute. In high school, he was very active in F.F.A. and stood out on the baseball team for four years. He enjoyed tractor pulling and golfing but one of the greatest pleasures in Doug's life was being with his many friends.

He died Wednesday, December 4, 2002, at Soldier at the age of 22 years, 10 months and 20 days.

Those survivors left to cherish Doug's memory include his parents, Steve and Pat Wessel of Mapleton; his paternal grandparents, LaVern and Irma Wessel of Ricketts; his maternal grandparents, Dean and Pearl Honaker of Harlan; a special grandmother, Marie Evers of Soldier; one brother, Michael Evers and his wife Judy of Earling; two sisters, Jaclyn, living at home and Brandi Lynn of Texas; one nephew, Matthew and one niece, Mikayla along with several other relatives and numerous good friends.

Doug was preceded in death by one brother, Matthew Evers.

Funeral Mass was held Saturday, December 7 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak with Rev. Richard Ball officiating.

Interment was made at Jordan Cemetery rural Soldier. Pall-bearers were Jamie Meadows, Jeff Meadows, Garred Blume, Brandon Blume, Chris Jensen, Nathan Jensen, Tony Mahlberg, Nick Mahlberg. Honorary pallbearers were Adam Dorale, Brady Goslar, Derick Bruhn, Mike Hargens, Nick Melby, The Tractor Pulling Crew. Armstrong Funeral Service of Mapleton was in charge of arrangements.

HARLAN -- Frances A. Wigness, 84, Harlan, died Wednesday, Oct. 2 in Harlan.


Services will be Saturday, Oct. 5 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Harlan, with burial in the Harlan Cemetery. Friends may call Friday, Oct. 4 from 10 a.m.-9 p.m., with family present from 7-8 p.m. at Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan.


Wigness is survived by sons Jerald (Linda) Wigness of Harlan and Gordon Wigness of Des Moines; sisters Mena Burmeister and Eleanor Bramer, both of Harlan; brother Raymond Thogerson of Lebanon, Ore.; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

WOODBINE - The funeral for Glenn S. Woodard, 93, of Woodbine will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Followers of Christ in Woodbine with Elder Francis Harper officiating.

Mr. Woodard died Nov. 24 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital.

He was born in Dunlap Dec. 13, 1908, to Sylvester Alexander and Cora Lee (Crandall) Woodard. He attended country school near Panama. He and his wife farmed near Dunlap and then moved to Nebraska and farmed there for one year. Then they moved to Odgen, Utah, where he worked in the poultry business. They moved back to a farm near Moorhead and then to Woodbine where they purchased their own farm. He also worked for Good Shepard Home in Omaha, Midcontinent Cold Storage in Omaha for 13 years and as the groundskeeper at Missouri Valley Schools. He retired as a groundskeeper in the late 1980s. The last number of years he worked for Pryor Auction in Woodbine.

Survivors include one daughter, Donna Kester, of Harlan; one son, Dale, of LaPorte, Colo.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation with the family will be tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Fouts Funeral Home Inc. in Woodbine. Burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery.
