Laurina Magdalene Blum was born Sept. 4, 1910, at Marshfield, WI., to Mary (Michalski) and Nicholas Britten. She was baptized at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Marshfield, WI., and confirmed at St. Mary's Our Lady of Fatima in Portsmouth. Laurina attended school in the Tennant area and also St. Mary's Catholic School in Portsmouth.

She married William Joseph Blum Jan. 26, 1932, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. Fourteen children were born to this union. Laurina and William were privileged to have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary in January of 1988. Prior to her marriage, she worked for an Omaha monument company. During her married life, she farmed with her husband residing in the Westphalia area. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. She died Oct. 5, 1999, at Elm Crest Retirement Center one month and one day after her 89th birthday.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William, Nov. 27, 1988; a son, Francis; four grandchildren, April Blum, Steve Sandbothe and Larry and Jerry Newland; three sisters, Lucille, Stella and Ruth; and one brother, Norbert. Survivors include seven sons, Kenneth Blum (Doris) of Walnut; Jerome "Jerry" Blum (Jean) of St. Paul, MN.; Bernard Blum (Glenda) of Ocean City, OR.; Marcus Blum (Janet of Fischer, TX.; Ralph Blum (Patti) of Harlan; Eugene Blum (Jackie) of Westphalia; Michael Blum (Vicky) of Co. Bluffs; six daughters, Mary Ann (Vernon) Sandbothe of Atlantic; Margaret (Robert) Halferty of Vancouver, WA.; Agnes (Jim) Starr of Milwaukee, WI; Monica (Lanny) Newland of Persia; Linda (John) White of Co. Bluffs; Theresa Miller of Colorado Springs, CO.; 46 grandchildren; 71 great grandchildren; one brother, Leo Britten of Omaha; and other relatives.

A Mass of Christian Burial was concelebrated Oc. 8, 1999, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, with Rev. Paul Bianchi celebrant, Rev. Michael Peters and Rev. Fred Reischl concelebrants and Rev. Benedict Kenkel the holilist. Burial was in St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia, with Agnes Starr, Margaret Halferty, Linda White, Monica Newland, Francis Blum, Theresa Miller and Mary Ann Sandbothe honorary casket bearers. Casket bearers were Ralph Blum, Kenneth Blum, Eugene Blum, Bernard Blum, Jerome Blum, Michael Blum and Marcus Blum. Pauley Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mary Agnes Gross, daughter of Anne Marie (Kohl) and Joseph Tremel, was born April 3, 1936, on a farm north of Panama. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Panama, and attended St. Mary's Catholic School. Following the completion of her education, she was employed at a camera shop in Omaha. Later, she worked at the Saylor Hotel Coffee Shop in Harlan.

She married Robert Gross May 3, 1956, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama. Following their wedding, the couple began farming west of Earling. They were the parents of seven children. In addition to the responsibilities of her home and family, she served on the Earling Town Council, volunteered as a Den Mother, assisted with Girl Scouting and was a correspondent for the Dunlap paper. She was an active parishioner at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling, serving on the Parish Council, as a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court St. Katherine No. 266, as a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic School Board where she served as president on two separate occasions, as an Altar Society volunteer also serving as president, CCD teacher and as a member of the church decoration committee responsible for holiday and seasonal decorating. In March of 1999, she became a resident of Little Flower Haven. She was able to return home due to the assistance of her family and Hospice care. She died Dec. 11, 1999, at her home in Earling, at age 63 years, eight months and eight days. Prior to her death, she had resided at Little Flower Haven.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her infant son, David; three brothers, Edward, Alphonse and Raymond, and one sister, Leona. She is survived by her children, Craig Gross (LuAnn) of Panama; Cindy Moore (Tom) of Phoenix, AZ.;Sandy Thielen (Tim) of Pavillion, WY.; Diane Martens (Lynn) of Portsmouth; Richard Gross (Annette) of Earling; Brad Gross and fiancee, Lisa Jumps of Earling; Kari Gross and her fiancee, Denny Kohles, of Panama, 11 grandchildren; brothers and sister, John Tremel (Dolores) of Earling; Leonard Tremel (Mary Pat) of Earling; Joseph Tremel (Irene) of Earling; Helen Frederick (Albert) of Earling; Charles Tremel (Bonnie) of Omaha, NE.; Kenneth Tremel (Betty) of Panama and Ralph Tremel (Elaine) of Panama; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 14, 1999, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling, with Rev. Michael Berner celebrant. Burial was in the St. Joseph's Cemetery with Joe Thielen, Mike Frederick, Matt Blum, Curt Tremel, Mike Martens and Brian Gross casket bearers. Pauley Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mass of Christian Burial for Mark Kenkel was held Saturday, August 21, 1999 at 1:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Manilla, Iowa. Con-celebrants were Father Robert Gralapp, Father Lloyd White and Father Robert Fangman. Lectors were Katie Sporrer and Gina Schmitz. Eulogy - Sylvia Sporrer, and Maria Jewell. Petitions: Amy Kenkel and Andrea Muff.

Music included "How Great Thou Art", "Be Not Afraid", and "Here I Am Lord" by the Sacred Heart Adult Choir. "On Eagle's Wings" with Melissa Muff, vocalist. Marilyn Backhaus was organist. "Grandpa, Tell Me About The Good Ole Days" - a recording by the Judds.

Gift bearers were Ashley Kenkel, Kayla Jewell, Jordan Kenkel, Madison Jewell, and Paige Jewell. Mass servers were Adam Sporrer and Todd Pontier.

Mark Louis, son of Theodore and Clara Eckerman Kenkel, was born October 8, 1920 in Earling, Iowa. He attended schools in Defiance and then graduated from high school in Epworth, Iowa in 1938. He then attended college in Girard, Pennsylvania. Following his schooling he was drafted into the United States Navy and served at Great Lakes Naval Station in Illinois. After his honorable discharge, Mark returned to Defiance and began farming.

On September 1, 1948, Mark was united in Marriage with Bernadine Margaret Fuhs in Portsmouth. Nine children were born to this union. Mark and Bernadine farmed near Portsmouth and then Manilla where they raised their children. In 1981, Mark retired and they moved into Manilla. Bernadine died July 1, 1998.

Mark was a member of Sacred Heart Church and was active in the Holy Name Society, Sacred Heart Choir, and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Manilla Community Club and the American Legion. He enjoyed woodworking, dancing, selling Krueger's Seeds, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

On May 1, 1998, Mark entered the Manilla Manor Nursing Home in Manilla, and died there Tuesday, August 17, 1999. He reached the age of 78 years, 10 months, and nine days.

Besides his parents and wife, Mark was preceded in death by his aunt Elizabeth Kenkel and a granddaughter Allison Kenkel.

He is survived by nine children: Cynthia and her husband Jim Salter of Moline, Illinois; Ronald Kenkel and his wife Jan of Oakland; Gloria and her husband Bob Muff of New Providence; Julia and her husband Bob Schmitz of Harlan; Marcia and her husband Art Pontier of Osceola; Sylvia and her husband Dave Sporrer of Templeton; Roger Kenkel and his wife Gail of Manilla; Rodney Kenkel and his wife Julie of Shenandoah; and Maria and her husband Vic Jewell of Fort Dodge; 21 grandchildren; three brothers: Ray Kenkel and his wife Evelyn of Council Bluffs; Ted Kenkel and his wife Judy of Council Bluffs; Joe Kenkel and his wife Alice of West Point, Nebraska; six sisters: Marie and her husband Virgil Bueltel of manning; Velma and her husband Les Pedersen of Denison; Terese Scheuring of Defiance; Leona and her husband Joe Moran of Honeycreek; Clarice and her husband Fred Hansen of Waterloo; JoAnn and her husband Don Kuehnhold of Denison; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Gross, Alban F. (1914-1998)

Alban Frank Gross, son of Joseph and Mary (Engel) Gross, was born on August 30, 1914, in Earling. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling and attended St. Joseph's Catholic School and Country School.

October 8, 1940, he was united in marriage to Lavina Kaufman at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. Nine children were born to this union, Joan, Mary Ann, Kathleen, Duane, Damian, Dean, Declan, David, and Jeanne. Shortly after their marriage, Alban and Lavina began farming in Union Township on the land his father had originally owned, purchasing it in 1944. Through the years, Alban and Lavina have worked together, loving the land. They had a diversified livestock and grain farming program. For forty-five years, Alban was a seed salesman for J.C. Robinson Seed Company, where he sold various crops. He was very active with Soil Conservation and completed all practices on his four hundred acres. Alban won the county and region Top Soil Conservation Award of 1982. He was an avid gardener giving vegetables to all of his family. He was also a drummer and a singer of the Earl Russell Orchestra for forty-five years. Alban was a lifelong member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling where he loved to pray the rosary. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1714.

Alban died on Saturday, April 4, 1998, having attained the age of eighty-three years, seven months, and five days. In addition to his parents, Alban was preceded in death by his brothers, Michael, Andrew, Leonard, Werner, and Norbert; his sisters, Clara, Anna, and Gertrude; and a grandson, Chad.

Survivors include his loving wife, Lavina of Earling; his children, Joan and her husband Bill Erlbacher of Earling, Mary Ann and her husband Ed Lapke of Dunlap, Kathleen and her husband Tom Leuschen of Houston, Texas. Duane and his wife Liz Gross of Omaha, Nebraska.

Bernadine Margaret, daughter of John and Kunigunda Foxhoven Fuhs, was born January 5, 1928, in Portsmouth, Iowa. She attended school at St. Mary's Catholic School in Portsmouth. She then did housework for neighbors and friends.

On September 1, 1948, Bernadine was united in marriage to Mark Kenkel in Portsmouth. Nine children were born to this union. Bernadine and Mark farmed near Portsmouth, and then Manilla, where they raised their children. In 1981 Mark retired and they moved into Manilla. As a member of Sacred Heart Church in Manilla, Bernadine enjoyed her membership in the Sacred Heart Alter and Rosary Society, as well as singing with Mark in the Sacred Heart Adult Choir. She also enjoyed sewing, crafts, gardening, and attending Helping Hand Club activities.

On July 1, 1998, Bernadine died in her sleep at her home in Manilla, reaching the age of 70 years, five months, and 28 days.

Besides her parents, Bernadine was preceded in death by a brother William Fuhs, and a granddaughter Allison Kenkel.

She is survived by her husband, Mark Kenkel of Manilla; nine children: Cynthia and her husband Jim Salter of Moline, Illinois; Ronald Kenkel and his wife Jan of Oakland; Gloria and her husband Bob Muff of New Providence; Julia and her husband Bob Schmitz of Harlan; Marcia and her husband Art Pontier of Osceola; Sylvia and her husband Dave Sporrer of Templeton; Roger Kenkel and his wife Gail of Manilla; Rodney Kenkel and his wife Julie of Shenandoah; and Maria and her husband Vic Jewell of Fort Dodge; 21 grandchildren; four sisters: Mildred Goeser, Mary Kramer, Rita Schaben, and Pat Smith; two brothers: Bob and Joe Fuhs; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

 Hoffmann, Lucille A. (1918-1997)

Lucille Amelia Hoffmann, the daughter of Anton and Mary Kuhl, was born January 7, 1918 in Earling. She died on Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs just 25 days before her 80th birthday.

She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling and attended St. Joseph's School.
On September 29, 1942, she was united in marriage to Alphonse Hoffmann at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling. Five sons were born to this union.

After this marriage, Lucille and Alphonse farmed in the Panama area all their married life until 1975, when he retired from farming. In 1978, they moved into their present home in Panama. They were privileged to have celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary in September of 1989.

Lucille was a member of St. Mary of The Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court St. Catherine, Sewing Circle, Senior Citizens, Legion Auxiliary, Bridge Club, Original member 500 Club card club.

In addition to her parents, Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, Alphonse; her sister, Helen Sternberg; and her brother, Charles Kuhl.

Surviving her are five sons; Jim and his wife Jeanne of Dunlap; Ron and his wife Jan of Papillion, Nebraska, Bob and his wife Debbie of Center Point, Texas; Mike and his wife Lori of West Des Moines; Brian of Spencer; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; special friends, Teresa and Hairy Andersen; other relatives and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial was concelebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997, at St. Mary of The Assumption Catholic Church in Panama with Rev. Mike Peters as the celebrant and Rev. Paul Bianchi as the concelebrant.

Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Panama with John Hoffmann, Aaron Hoffmann, Jeff Hoffmann, Adam Hoffmann, Joe Hoffmann and Todd Hoffmann serving as casket bearers.

PORTSMOUTH - William Jacob Fuhs, son of John and Kunigunda (Foxhoven) Fuhs, was born July 16, 1926 on a farm near Portsmouth on the Harrison/Shelby County line. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth and attended country school near Portsmouth. After school, he helped on the family farm.

May 4, 1953, he married Dolores Kramer at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance. They became the parents of twelve children. After their marriage, they farmed on the Fuhs home place northwest of Portsmouth until retiring from farming in 1982. He then worked for a short time at Leinen, Inc. and G & R Feed & Grain at Portsmouth and Boyer Valley Rendering in Denison. He retired in July of 1988, and has continued to reside on the family farm since that time. He had served as a little league baseball coach at one time and also softball as well as umpiring little league games. He was a life long member of St. Mary's Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth and the Knights of Columbus, Earling Council # 1741. He died July 10, 1996 at Myrtue Memorial Hospital just six days before his 70th birthday.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra, June 26, 1960. Survivors include his wife, Dolores Fuhs of Panama; his children, John (Linda) Fuhs of Co. Bluffs; Janet (Joseph) Kohles of Ralston, NE; Randall Fuhs; Daniel (Janis) Fuhs all of Portsmouth; Carol (Eugene) Bissen and Richard Fuhs abd his friend, Karla Moeller, all of Earling; Eugene Fuhs of Portsmouth; Donald (Dianne) Fuhs of Underwood; Cheryl Fuhs of Palm Beach, FL; Joan (Joseph) Gubbels of Panama; and Jill Fuhs and her fiance, Brian Holloway of Tennant; 13 grandchildren; his sisters and brothers, Bernadine (Mark) Kenkel of Manilla; Mildred (Don) Goeser of Co. Harlan - Roy Peter Hansen, son of Emil and Bertha (Sperby) Hansen was born July 8, 1903 on a farm west of Harlan. At the age of three years, he moved with his family to a farm northeast of Shelby and when he was nine years old to a farm in Cass Township. He attended school at Tennant.

Sept. 8, 1926 he married Frieda Boettger at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan. After their marriage, they made their home with his parents for few months before moving to a farm owned by her parents. They became the parents of three children. In the spring of 1933 the family moved to a farm near Tennant. In 1948 they moved to the farm they purchased from Chris M. Christenseb west of Harlan. They retired from farming in 1970, but continued to reside on the farm as Harlan and the Community High School grew around them. He died June 12, 1995 at Myrtue Memorial Hospital at age 91 years, 11 months and four days. He was a past member of the Tennant Methodist Church and was presently a member of the First United Methodist Church in Harlan. They were privileged to have celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary last Sept.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ann, a granddaughter, Debra Lynn Garrity, a brother-in-law*, Frank Rusk and a brother, Dr. Arthur Hansen.

Surviving is his wife, Frieda Hansen of Harlan, a son, Richard (Elizabeth) Hansen of Ankeny; a daughter, Lorene "Lorrie" (Willard) Zimmerman of Omaha; six grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; a sister, Mable Poole of Harlan and a brother, Russell Hansen of Shelby; nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held June 15, 1995 at First United Methodist Church in Harlan with Rev. Paul Wilcox officiating. Burial was in the Shelby Cemetery with Larry Meylor, Deane Blakely, Edward G. John and Anker C. Rasmussen honorary casket bearers. Casket bearers were Bob Book, Charles E. Hayes, Mike Cain, Vic Morgan, Sheldon Howerter and David Peters. Pauley Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Kunigunda Fuhs, 92, Earling, died Sunday, October 10 at the Little Flower Haven in Earling. Services will be held Wednesday, October 13 in the morning at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth with burial in the St. Mary's Cemetery at Portsmouth.

Fuhs is survived by three sons -- William (Dolores) Fuhs of Panama, Robert (Marge) Fuhs of Sunnyville, Calif. and Joe Fuhs of Omaha; five daughters -- Bernadine (Mark) Kenkel of Manilla, Mildred (Don) Goeser of Council Bluffs, Mary Ann (Mark) Kramer of Earling, Rita (Edwin) Schaben of Panama and Pat (Jerry) Smith of Saratoga, Calif.; three brothers -- Ted Foxhoven of Harlan, Ralph Foxhoven of Harlan and Bernard Foxhoven of Shenandoah; and a sister, Tillie (John) Healey of Oxnard, Calif.

Alvin H Greenwood, 89, a resident of the Longview Nursing Home in Missouri Valley, died there on February 6, 1993.

He was born in Dunlap and lived there most of his life. He was a retired farmer. Funeral services were held on February 9, at the United Methodist Church in Dunlap, Elder Darrell Argotsinger officiated at the service. Internment was in the Manteno Cemetery near Dunlap. Fouts Funeral Home in Dunlap, handled the arrangements. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence , in 1978.

He is survived by: one daughter, Dena Shepley of Windsor, Ontario, Canada; one son, Dick of Missouri Valley; one sister, Ruth Kjer of Council Bluffs; one brother, Bill of Dunlap; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Peterson, Eugene "Dane" Matthew (1920-1993)

Eugene "Dane" Matthew Peterson, the son of Andrew and Anna Catherine (Fuhs) Peterson, was born on October 4, 1920 on a farm near Portsmouth in Shelby County, Iowa. He died on Friday, November 5, 1993, at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of 73 years, one month and one day.

Dane was baptized at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth. He attended St. Mary's Catholic Schools graduating with the high school class of 1938. He attended Iowa State University at Ames, Iowa and Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dane played baseball at both schools and later played Minor League Baseball in the Cubs Organization.

He enlisted in the United States Navy in August, 1942 and served his country at sea in World War II.

Dane moved back to Harlan after completing his military service and married Bonnie Herkenrath on June 23, 1945 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth. Of this marriage five children were born; three daughters and two sons. They lived in Harlan until 1949 and then he became employed by Skelly Oil Company at Sioux Rapids, Iowa and St. Louis, Missouri. He returned to Harlan in 1960 and went into business for himself operating Peterson Gas Company. He later opened The 59'er Restaurant in 1979 and The 59'er Motel in 1992.

Dane was a long time member of St. Michael's Catholic church in Harlan, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Pauline Jennifer Maiwald and a brother, Urban Peterson. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; his children, Janelle (Stephen) Gillespie of Omaha, Nebraska; Vance Peterson of Milton, Iowa; Laurel (Doug) DeWees of Lansing, Michigan; Jay (Lana) Peterson of Harlan, Iowa; and Aimee (Mike) Henscheid of Oshkosh, Wisconsin; six grandchildren; a sister, Helen Anderson of Omaha, Nebraska; a brother, Bernard (Joan) Peterson of Ormond Beach, Florida, nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Fretz, Leonard N. (1913 - 1991)

Leonard N. Fretz was born June 22, 1913, the son of Bernard and Rosa Blum Fretz. He died February 7, 1991 at the Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove, Iowa at the age of 77 years.

Leonard began his education in Defiance, and continued his education in the St. Rose of Lima Catholic School in Denison. After his education, he held various working positions in the area. He was involved in bridge  construction, plumbing, employed at Bank Implement, and farming, retiring in 1979.

On December 24, 1938, Leonard was united in marriage to Erma Boger at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, by Pastor C. W. Schmidt. The couple were blessed with the birth of five children.

As an adult, Leonard was confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak.

He had an affection for his family, and for their families, and for Joann, his favorite daughter-in-law, he had a special feeling for her warmth and happiness.

In his spare time he enjoyed socializing by playing cards, and he enjoyed the tranquil time of fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter in infancy; one brother in infancy; three sisters; Angela Boslaugh, Irene Hanrahan and Laura Pelley. Survivors include his wife, Erma of Charter Oak; one son Floyd and his wife, Joann of Orange City; three daughters; Phyllis Christiansen and her husband, Gailen of Sixox City, Sharon Stuart and her husband Dick of Bellevue, Nebraska, and Patty Altis and her husband, Douglas of Ida Grove; 12 grandchildren; two sisters, Nita Campbell and her husband, Lowell of Denison and Elizabeth Fouts and her husband, Dean of Dunlap; and one brother-in-law, Earl Hanrahan of Denison. Gerald Kramer, 64

Services for Gerald Kramer, 64, Harlan, were held on Monday, Dec. 31 at St. Michael's Catholic Church with burial in the Harlan Cemetery. Kramer died Thursday at his home in Harlan. He farmed several years with his wife, Alma, before he became employed at Western Iowa Pork. Later, he worked as a custodian at Harlan Community High School.

He is survived by his wife, Alma; two sons, John, Leavenworth, KS and Larry, Harlan; four daughters, Sandra (Mrs. Dave) Hopper, Carroll; Debbie (Mrs. Robert) Rounds, Harlan; Geralyn Kramer, Harlan and Tami Kramer, Maryville, MO.

Seven sisters, Irene (Mrs. Dale) Friesen, Council Bluffs; Lillian Schaben, Harlan; Rita (Mrs. Verdy) Klocke, Cascade; Theresa (Mrs. Tom) Grote, Portsmouth; Dolores (Mrs. Bill) Fuhs, Portsmouth; Leona (Mrs. Joe) Bissen, Clarinda and Mary (Mrs. Francis) Heese, Earling.

Two brothers - Frank Kramer, Mesa, AZ and Norbert Kramer, Omaha, NE and eight grandchildren.
