The Harlan Area Obituary Collection has been generously contributed by Alice Buman Bontz and her brother Ray Buman.

For many years Alice cut all the obituaries and death notices from Harlan area newspapers, and carefully recorded the name of the newspaper, the date of publication and the page it appeared, amassing as complete a collection of Harlan area obituaries as is possible. Recently Ray scanned each clipped obituary and death notice into PDF format. Today's scanning technology is able to make the text in each PDF searchable, so the IAGenWeb search engines should find the surnames, etc. within the text. However, the scanning technology is not perfect, so indexes are also provided that include basic info about the deceased and the surnames mentioned in the obit.

Sadly Ray passed away in October, 2019, but Shelby County researchers continue to benefit from the many hours Ray spent as a volunteer and contributor to IAGenWeb. His love of history and genealogy lives on through this collection. Ray Buman's Memorial page (offsite).
