Per the National Library of Medicine: "Influenza and pneumonia killed more American soldiers and sailors during the war than did enemy weapons. In the fall of 1918, U.S. Army and Navy medical officers in camps across the country presided over the worst epidemic in American history."

_____ Camp Gordon, Ga. He sailed overseas September 19, 1918, and died October 2, 1918, at Brest, France, just after landing, of pneumonia. He was buried at Lambezellee with Co. I, 5th Repl. Reg., at Finistere, France, in the American cemetery.


EILERT ALLEN of Lake View, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eilert Allen of Lake View, was born in 1896 and enlisted at Lake View, April 7, 1917, and first served with Co. B, 168th Inf., at Ida Grove. He sailed overseas November 14, 1917, and saw service in Bandonviller, Seuppers, Oureq, Second Battle of Marne. He died in action July 27, 1918, at Battle of Marne when hit by a high explosion. He held the rank of Sergeant.


ROBERT LEO ATWATER of Minden, Nebraska, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. D. Atwater of Minden, Nebr., was born in 1897 and enlisted at Lake View, April 9, 1917, and first served with Co. B, 168th Inf. at Ida Grove. He sailed overseas in Nvember, 1917, and saw service at Chauteau Thierry, where he was shot through the lung, which caused death August 29, 1918, at Base Hospital No. 48, France.


ROBERT BERNARD BAMFORD of Lytton, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Bamford of Denison, was born in 1892 and enlisted at Denison, July 29, 1918, and first served with 5th Co., 1st Eng. Recruit Bn., at Camp Forest, Ca. He also served with Co. B, 212th Eng., at Camp Devens, Mass. He died September 26, 1918 at Camp Devens of pneumonia.


GEORGE H. BIHRER of Odebolt, son of Mr. nd Mrs. Martin Bihrer of Odebolt, was born in 1893 and enlisted at Sac City, July 26, 1918, and first served with Co. H, 14th Inf. Repl. Bn. at Camp Gordon, Ga. He also served at Camp Merritt, N. J., with Auto Repl. Draft Co. No 6. He sailed overseas September 18, 1918 and died October 10, 1918, of pneumonia at Base Hospital No. 65, Brest, France. He was buried in A. E. F. cemetery No. 531 at Lambezellee.


ROBERT FRANK BERNHARDT of Odebolt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Bernhardt of Odebolt, was born in 1896 and enlisted at Sac City, September 5, 1918, and first served with 163rd Depot Brigade at Camp Dodge. He died October 15, 1918 at Camp Dodge, of pneumonia.


HARVEY MORGAN BITTNER of Lake view, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bittner of Lake View, was born in 1890 and enlisted at Winner, So. Dak., September 4, 1918, and first served with 161st Depot Brigade at Camp Grant, Ill. He died of pneumonia in Base Hospital at Camp Grant, October 4, 1918.


CHARLES C. BLOSS of Early, son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Bloss of Early, was born in 1894 and enlisted at Sac City, July 26, 1918, and first served with Co. G, 5th Inf., at Camp Gordon, Ga. He also served at Camp Merrit, N. J. He sailed overseas September 12, 1918, and saw service in France five months and died January 21, 1919 at Chateauroux of Meningitis.


ERNEST J. BULLER of Kiron, enlisted on May 13, 1917. He sailed overseas August 17. He died January 20, 1919, of influenza. Buried - American Sebastopol, Toul, Meurthe-Moselle, France. Was disinterred and reburied at St. Mihiel, American Cemetery No. 1233, Thiaucourt M. et M.


IVER HENRY CARLSON of Odebolt, son of Mrs. Mary Carlson of Geneva, Ill., was born in 1890 and enlisted at Denison, July 26, 1918, and first served with Co. 1, 4th Repl. Reg. at Camp Gordon, Ga. He also served with Co. C, 316th Inf. He sailed overseas September 1, 1918, and saw service in Argonne drive. He was wounded in hand November 8, in Argonne, contracted pneumonia from exposure and died November 23 at Limoges, France, and is buried there.


GLEN CRISS from Sac City, son of Mrs. W. H. Criss of Sac City, was born in 1898 and enlisted at Grinnell in the Student Army Training Corps of Grinnell College. Died with pneumonia, following influenza, on December 8, 1918, at Grinnell.


ALBERT LESLIE DAVIS of Early, son of Mrs. D. C. Davis of Seattle, Wash., enlisted at Ida Grove, May 25, 1917, and first served with Co. B, 2nd Iowa Inf., at Camp Cody, N. M. He also served with Co. A, 126th M. G. Bn., and Q. M. Dept. He died January 18, 1918, at Camp Cody, N. M., of pneumonia and was buried at Early,


HARRY ELMER DAVIS of Elmdale, Kansas, son of M. Davis of Elmdale, Kansas, was born in 1893 and enlisted at Sac City, July 26, 1918, and first served with Co. I, 5th Repl. Reg. at Camp Gordon, Ga. He died October 8, 1918, of influenza and pneumonia at Camp Gordon, Ga.


HENRY ARNOLD DRILLING of Lake View, son of Mrs. Mary Drilling of Lake View, was born in 1894 and enlisted at Sac City, July 26, 1918, and first served with Co. C, 5th Repl. Reg., at Camp Gordon, Ga. He also served at Camp Merritt, N. J. He sailed overseas September 18, 1918, and died October 2, 1918, at Brest, France, of pneumonia. He was buried t Lambezellee Finistere, France.


ROBERT DURMIN of Odebolt, was born in Carlisle, Pa., and enlisted with the 163rd depot brigade in July 1917. He spent the first three months in Camp Dodge and was then transferred to a balloon school in Omaha. He died in Omaha of the flu, October, 1917.


ROBERT BARNARD ETTEL of Sac City, son of Mrs. Artilda Marshall of Sac City, was born in 1892 and enlistede at Sac City, July 26, 1918, and first served _____.


BAYARD CRAIG FULLER of Sac City, son of Dr. Z. Fuller of San Antonio, Texas, was born in 1896 and enlisted at Des Moines, May 13, 1918, and first served at Jefferson Barracks, Mo. He died May 27, 1918.


WILLIAM ROBERT GLEIM of Nemaha, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Gleim of Wall Lake, was born in 1895 and enlisted at Sac City , July 26, 1918, and first served with Co. H, 14th Inf. Tr. Bn. at Camp Gordon, Ga. He sailed overseas September 19, 1918, and died on board ship October 1, 1918, of pneumonia, following influenza.


MERTON VALENTIN HAIR of Early, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Hair of Early, was born in 1900 and enlisted at Ida Grove, June 1, 1917, and first served with Co. B, 2nd Iowa Inf., at Ida Grove. He also served at Fair Grounds, Des Moines with 168th Inf. He sailed overseas November 14, 1917, and saw service in Lorraine sector. He was wounded in left arm June 17, 1918 and died from effects, June platoon received the French Croix de Guerre for conduct under fire _____ 20, 1918, at Buccaret, France. His _____ March 5, 1918.


JOHN PETERSON  HINRICHSEN of Wall Lake, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hans I. Hinrichsen of Crawford county, was born  in 1894 and enlisted at Sac City, May 2, 1918, and first served with Co. A, 338th M. G. Bn., at Camp Dodge. He also served with Co. D, 1st Devel. Bn., Camp Dodge, where he died November 27, 1918 of pneumonia.


ARTHUR EDWIN JARVIS of Sac City, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Jarvis of Sac City, was born in 1896 and enlisted at Sac City, July 26, 1918, and first served with Co. I, 5th Repl. Reg., at Camp Gordon, Ga. He sailed overseas in September, 1918, and died October 5, 1918, in France.


CHRISTIAN L. JENSEN of Lake View, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter W. Jensen of Lake View, was born in 1894 at Gardner, Ill., and enlisted at Sac City, July 26, 1918, and first served with Co. H, 14th Inf. Repl. Bn., at Camp Gordon, Ga. He also served at Camp Merritt, N. J. He sailed overseas September 20, 1918, and died on shipboard September 30, 1918, of pneumonia, and was buried October 20 at Dwight, Ill. He had lived in Sac county since 1907, on the Jensen place near Lake View, attending school in that district. He married Miss Anna Buskov of Gardner Ill., February 19, 1918.


GEORGE DEWEY JENSEN of Lake View, son of  Oliver Jensen of Lake View, was born in 1899 and enlisted at Ida Grove May, 1917, and first served with Co. B, 2nd Iowa Inf., at Ida Grove. He also served in 168th U. S. Inf. with the rank of Corporal. He died December 26, 1918, at Silver City, New Mexico, after having been returned there suffering with tuberculosis contracted overseas.


WILLIAM FRANCIS MARTIN of Odebolt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed S. Martin of Odebolt, was born Oct. 27, 1897, and enlisted at Ames Oct. 1, 1918. First served with the S. A. T. C. at Ames. Died at base hospital at Ames Oct. 16, 1918.


FRED CLIFFORD MEYER of Odebolt, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Meyer of Odebolt, was born in 1893 and enlisted at Sac City, July 26, 1918, and first served with Co. 6, Auto Repl., at Camp Gordon, Ga., He sailed overseas and died October 7, 1918 at Brest, France.


GUY L. MILLER of Sac City, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Miller of Sac City, was born in 1894 and enlisted at Sac City, July 26, 1918, and first served with 6th Co., Inf. Repl., at Camp Gordon, Ga. He also served at Camp Merritt, N. J. He sailed overseas September 18, 1918, and died October 10, 1918, at Brest, France, with the influenza and pneumonia.


CHARLES R. NILES of Sac City, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Niles of Sac City, was born in 1894 and enlistede at Sac City, September 5, 1918, and first served with Co. 40, 163rd Dep. Bg., at Camp Dodge. He died October 13, 1918 at Camp Dodge of influenza and pneumonia.


CARL FREDERICK NOMSEN was born in Wall Lake January 14th, 1889, third son of Julius and Bertha Nomsen, went to school in Wall Lake and grew to manhood there. Enlisted in the World War as soon as possible, but was released on pleas of his parents that he was their only son at home. Was in the draft and went to France in Co. H, 23rd infantry and died in France Dec. 9, 1918. Is buried in San Mihiel, France.


ANDREW G. NORTON of Odebolt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Norton of Council Bluffs, was born Oct. 27, 1892, and enlisted with Camp Gordon replacement. He was a member of Company H, 14th infantry. He died at the base hospital at Brest, France, Oct. 9, 1918.


ROBERT MERLE PIKE of Odebolt, enlisted at Des Moines, June 26, 1918, and first served with Co. 1, 15th Regiment, at Great Lakes, Ill. He died October 12, 1918, at Great Lakes Naval Training Hospital.


JOSEPH J. PUETZ of Early, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Puetz of Early, was born in 1894 and enlisted at Sac City, July 26, 1918, and first served with Co. I, 5th Inf. Repl. Regt., at Camp Gordon. He also served at Camp Merritt, N. J. He sailed overseas September 19, 1918, and died October 3, 1918, at Brest, France, of pneumonia.


HERMAN ROOSE of Odebolt, son of Ed Roose of Odebolt, was a private in Co. B, 168th infantry of the 42nd (Rainbow) division. He died at Chaumont, France, Dec. 31, 1917.


ALBERT H. SCHNIRRING of Sac City, son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. J. Schnirring of Sac City, was born in 1887 and enlisted at Sac City, September 22, 1917, and first served with 313 Engrs. at Camp Dodge. He also served at Camp Pike and Camp Dix. He sailed overseas and saw service 6 months. He died October 15, 1918, of pneumonia. He is buried at Carbon Blanc, France.


PERRY LUTHER TOOMBS of Newell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Toombs of Mill Shoals, Ill., was born in 1890 and enlisted at Sac City, September 22, 1917, and first served with 350th Inf., Hdq. Co. at Camp Dodge. He also served at Camp Pike, Camp Green and Camp Mills. He sailed overseas May 6, 1918, and was killed in action on Septembr 27, 1918, in France. He served in the 39th and 547th Infantry Regiments.


CHARLES WERKMASTER of Odebolt, son of Herman Werkmaster of Odebolt, was born in 1895 and enlisted at Sac City, July 26, 1918, and first served with Auto Repl. Draft Inf., Co. 6, at Camp Gordon. He sailed overseas and died in France with the influenza.


RUSSELL A. WILLIAMS of Sac City, was born in 1896 and enlisted at Sac City, July 26, 1918, and first served with C. C., 212th, at Camp Forest, Ga. He also served at Camp Devens, Mass., where he died with pneumonia.


ARNO N. WITTKOPP of Wall Lake, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wittkopp of Peshtigo, Wis., was born in 1892 and enlisted at Sac City, August 2, 1918, and first served with Inf. Replacement at Camp McArthur, Texas. He also served at Camp Merritt, N. J. He sailed overseas September, 1918, and died of pneumonia on October 12, 1918, at Le Mans, France.
