PUMPTOWN CEMETERY

Union Township, Ringgold County, Iowa

Pumptown Cemetery is an old cemetery located on a ridge in a field, approximately 300 yards from a dirt road in Union Township of Ringgold County [NW1/4 Sec. 15, T70, R28]. Twenty-one gravestones were all that could be found although there are indications that many more burials had been made in this cemetery. It seems that the last burial was made in 1924.

Some early records refer to Pumptown as Anderson graveyard, the Anderson family owning the land when the cemetery was established.

Pumptown cemetery was recorded for Ringgold County Historical Society by Betty Ruby and Ruth Haley of Diagonal in 1978; transcriptions updated November of 2000 by Rick Wiley of Diagonal. In the summer of 2009 the Ringgold County Cemetery Preservation Society and the Bill and Angie Hynek family did extensive restoration work at Pumptown Cemetery.

Tony Mercer photographed the gravestones in June of 2012.

Veteran information updated May of 2015 courtesy of Cathy Kilgore, Ringgold County Veteran Affairs; Transcription updated October 2020 couresty of Cathy Kilgore; plot location from Raymond Banner's book, Cemetery Gravestone Recordings of Ringgold County.
