Plymouth County

The westward expansion of Iowa in the 1800s by the railroads and eager settlers led to the founding on many towns in each county. Often times the towns only consisted of a post office, or a hotel and bar, but they served their purpose as a rest stop for the horses.
Some of these towns survived, others did not. Changes in trade routes and railroad lines often led to the quick demise of some of Plymouth County’s earliest settlements. Some of these towns are still in existence, but are no longer incorporated. The following is a list of some of the Towns & Communities of Plymouth County through the years. |

Lincoln - Stanton township line near Neptune...Vogt was just a small bldg on the mail route, named for J.F. Vogt, an early LeMars postmaster. Lafe Gardner of Lincoln Twp, began a mail route in 1891 through 1895, bringing mail from James Station & LeMars to Lincoln Twp. (Thanks to Justin Herbst for finding this information) |
