The James and Elizabeth Brownlee family, date and location unknown. They farmed awhile in Plymouth County. Back row: William James (Will), Florence Jenny/Jennie (later O'Connor then Rosberg), Robert Edward (Bob). |
This is one of my favorite photos of Jim Brownlee. He and wife Elizabeth (Lizzie McNeil) were born in Antrim, Northern Ireland and came to the U.S. after their marriage. They first lived near his brother and family in Ida County, then near Cushing then farmed in Plymouth County, I believe in Liberty Twp where I believe this photo was taken. They eventually retired to Sioux City. They had three children: William James, Robert Edward and Florence Jenny.
Wedding photo of Florence Brownlee and Michael O'Connor. I don't know much about Mike except his death during the flu epidemic. He was Irish Catholic. Florence's parents were North Irish Protestants who felt strongly about NOT marrying Catholics. I suspect that created some interesting times within the family, though Mike was apparently well liked. I have never been able to find Mike in a census report. He died 16 Feb 1919. |
1895 Iowa Census, Woodbury County, Iowa: Name: Florence J. Brownlee 1910 census of Liberty Township, Woodbury County, Iowa, 10 May 1910: May 1930 U.S. Federal census 8th or 9th precinct, block 7 Myrtle Street, Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa (from same paper 3 weeks later.) |
This is my grandparents' wedding photo. Lillian May Poradek married Robert Edward Brownlee on 3 February 1913. The attendants were her siblings, Anne and Joseph Poradek. Anne later married A. L. Armstrong and lived mostly in Sioux City. Joe moved to the Minneapolis area where descendants still live. In 1913 all were residents of Plymouth County, though I do not know the exact location of the wedding itself, either in the Hinton/Merrill area or possibly Sioux City. Grandpa was a Plymouth County Supervisor in the 1940s.
This is a collage of information on my grandfather, R. E. Brownlee. Other than the last driver's license, all was in Plymouth County. Grandpa had asthma which was very limiting and I assume made him ineligible for the draft. It also required an early retirement and contributed to an early death at age 63.
