EMMETSBURGH. Lies on the west fork Des Moines river, a water-power stream in the central part of Palo Alto Co., of which it is the county seat, a station on the Iowa & Dakota div. C., M. & St. P. Ry. It ships grain, stock and produce, has 3 churches, a public school and a grist mill. It is, via rail and mail route, 147 miles n w of Des Moines, 296 n w of Burlington, 238 n w of Dubuque, and 274 n w of Davenport. Population, 900. Stages daily to West Bend, 20 miles, fare $1.50; to Estherville, 24 miles, fare $1.50, and to Swan Lake, 22 miles; also weekly to Sioux Rapids, 30 miles. Express, U.S. Mail daily. Wm. J.
