HISTORY OF HARRIS LEGION POST #392

The Newell Wilmarth American Legion Post #392 was first organized in 1919 after World War I and was named after Newell Wilmarth, a WWI casualty. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Judson Wilmarth.

The post re-organized in early 1954 and the name was changed to Wilmarth-Kruger Post #392. Martin Kruger, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George M Kruger, was the first WWII casualty, thus the change to Wilmarth-Kruger Post.

Casualties in WWII were Donald Heppler, Louis Fousek and Martin Kruger.

The Post erected a monument in the local cemetery honoring the Unknown Soldier.

The Harris Legion Auxiliary was chartered on October 11, 1954 with 15 charter members.

On June 17, 1955 the Post and Auxiliary dedicated their Legion Hall. Both units received their new charters at the ceremony. The charters were presented to them by Howard Wilmarth, a charter member of the first Legion unit organized after WWI>
