S. D. SHIRES
Samuel Day
Shires, son of Thomas and Sarah Shires, was born in Montgomery Co.
on October 31, 1872. He attended a country school. He married Addie
Grace Smith on April 25, 1894. Grace was the daughter of Robert and
Sydna Smith. She was born near Muscatine, Iowa on April 21, 1873.
She attended country schools and later taught in one. Day was a
farmer and their first home was a log cabin in Pilot Grove Township.
Later they moved 2½ miles south of Elliott, where they lived until
retirement and moved into Elliott. Day won many prizes on his seed
corn. He served several years on the Elliott school board. Day
passed away Feb. 27, 1961 and Grace on October 21, 1957. Both are
buried in Elliott Cemetery.

Ethel – Mrs. Marion Morgan – died in 1944.
Blanche – Mrs. Gail Wright.
Lola
– Mrs. Hazen West.
Maurice – married to Louise Selby.
Oren
– married to Laura Trimble.
Harlen – married to Olove Isom.
Helen – Mrs. Claude Hamlin.
Mildred – Mrs. Edward Selby.
Elizabeth – died at age of 1½ years.
The Shires Hill was
where many people tried out new cars, to see if they could make it
on high or at all. Many coasting parties were held on that hill. The
Shires farm had one of the finest springs that provided water for
the stock in every pasture or enclosure. It is still active today.
