H. J. MEWHIRTER

   Henry Jesse Mewhirter, one of seven children, was born Jan. 15, 1868 in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, the son of Fredrick and Hanna (Smith) Mewhirter. Fredrick was born April 25, 1823, the son of John Barr and Mary Anne (Reed) and married Elizabeth M. Scott, Dec. 12, 1859. Fredrick then married Hanna Smith, Jan. 1, 1860. Hanna was born Feb. 7, 1835, in Vermillion County, Illinois the daughter of Hiram and Naomi Smith and died June 23, 1898. Fredrick died Dec. 14, 1897. Both are buried in the Smith Cemetery, located two miles north of Griswold, Iowa.

   Henry Jesse married Flora Belle Wilson, Oct. 1, 1893, at the home of her parents, near Elliott. She was one of five children born to Job S. and Pheby Foggy Wilson and was born in lee County, Iowa on Sept. 22, 1875. Job S. Wilson was born Feb. 25, 1852 and died Dec. 4, 1925. Pheby F. Wilson was born in 1853 and died in 1883. Both are buried at the Lowman Cemetery, Pleasant Township. Mr. and Mrs. Mewhirter farmed in Pottawattamie and Cass County their entire life.

   Henry J. and Flora B. were the parents of six children. Ila Mae was born Dec. 3, 1893 and died Jan 10, 1964. Mable Clare was born April 13, 1895 - Fay B. was born Feb. 16, 1897 - Lee Allen was born July 14, 1889 - Jesse Ross was born May 30, 1906 - and Helen Laverne was born Feb. 7, 1913 and died Nov. 7, 1939.

   Henry J. Mewhirter passed away Mar. 31 1956 at home in Elliott. Flora B. Mewhirter passed away April 24, 1961 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Both are buried in Hillside Cemetery, Elliott.

   Mr. and Mrs. Mewhirter celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1953.

   Flora B. Mewhirter was a member of the Elliott Methodist Church and was baptized in the Nishnabotna River at an early age.
