FRANK HUBERT MERCER (1888-1964)
Frank
Hubert Mercer was born 15 Nov. 1888, at Elliott, Iowa, the son of
Jesse "Bud" Thornton and Mary Elizabeth (DeWitt) Mercer.
He
received his education in this area graduating from Elliott High
School in 1906. He attended Iowa State College in Ames from 1906
through 1909, at which time he had to leave college to go home to
assist in caring for his ill father.
Mr. Mercer
taught school for one year at the Plowman School, where he had
attended school as a child. In 1912-1913 he taught the eighth grade
in Elliott. He was principal of this same school from 1914 through
1917. After this time he devoted his full time to farming.
Frank H.
Mercer married Lucy Cassandra Rosencrans who was born 8 Oct. 1888,
Mortons Mill, Iowa, the daughter of Benjamin Talbot and Eliza Jane
(Bliss) Rosencrans, at the home of Wm. L. DeWitt 3 Jun 1914. They
lived in Elliott until the Spring of 1924 when they and his brother
Charles Mercer and his family moved to western Nebraska to join
their brothers Geo. E. and Lan Mercer in Big Springs. Later in 1939
Mr. and Mrs. Mercer moved to Sidney, Nebraska.
In 1946
Mr. and Mrs. Mercer returned to the old home, friends and neighbors
of Elliott. They were active in the community, both were members of
the Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star. Mr. Mercer
became a member of the Summitt Masonic Lodge No. 493 of Elliott in
1909. In 1956 be became a member of the Za-Ga-Zig Temple of the
Shrine in Des Moines. Most of his life and interests were centered
around farming and education. He served as a member of the Elliott
School Board for several years after their return to Elliott.
Mrs.
mercer was a member of the WSCS of the Methodist Church, Birthday
Club and the Embroidery Club.
Frank and
Lucy Mercer had two daughters, Elizabeth Lucille (Mrs. Sam H. Adams)
b. 14 March 1917, and Agnes Marie (Mrs. Erling Pederson) 24 May
1921. Both born in Elliott, Iowa and now living in Columbus,
Georgia.
Frank H.
Mercer died 18 April 1964 in Alexandria, Virginia and his wife Lucy
died 21 Aug. 1963 in Columbus, Georgia. Both are buried in Hillside
Cemetery, Elliott, Iowa.
