E. C. and CLARA McCARTHY
Emmett C.
McCarthy (b. Lewis, Iowa), married Clara Hartman (b. Roseville,
Ill.). In 1904, they set up housekeeping in the hired man's house on
the Till DeWitt place. After a year they moved to Elliott. E. C.
McCarthy was Editor of the Graphic from 1902 to 1912. The bound
volumes of the paper are now in the Elliott Library. Mildred and
Russell were both born in Elliott. Later, Emmett was in the
insurance business in Griswold and Red Oak. In the early 1930's
Emmett and Clara moved to Michigan to be near their daughter. Then
they moved back to Elliott vicinity, and to Griswold.
Mildred
graduated from Red Oak High School and Battle Creek College, Michigan in
Physical Education. She married Earl Stive, a graduate of Mich.
State Univ. Earl taught school awhile and worked for Kelloggs Co. of
Battle Creek. Before his death, he achieved vice-presidency of the
company. He died of a heart attack while watching a football game on
T.V. They had three children, all married, two live in Calif. the
other in Mich. Mildred lives in Mill Brae, Calif., and is a ham
radio operator.
Russell graduated from Griswold High School, Simpson College, and has an M.A. from
Univ. of Iowa. He taught and coached in various schools, and while
at Lyons High School, Clinton, Ia., he had his only undefeated football
team. While teaching and coaching at Hinsdale Twp. High School, Ill., for
24 years, he introduced wrestling program and relays in track. In
the classroom he introduced courses in business law and business
principles. He retired in 1969 to devote full time to operating a
teacher's credit union. He had two children: a girl, married and is
a teacher in Iowa, and a son who is a doctor of medicine in Grants
Pass, Oregon.
