CRAIG
Benjamin
Franklin Craig was born August 31, 1831, at Cheviot, Ohio, The son of Edward and Elizabeth Gaines Craig. He served in the U. S.
Navy from January 13, 1864 to November 4, 1865. He was married to Vilena Cooper at Blue Grass, Iowa. They were the parents of three
children: Anna, Franklin Curtis, and Rhoda who died at age
two. Some time after the death of his wife he came to Montgomery County
and lived in Elliott where he was Justice of the Peace. He
died March 23, 1892 and is buried in Soldiers Cemetery in Rock Island,
Illinois.
Franklin
Curtis (better known as Dick), son of Benjamin Franklin
and Vilena Cooper Craig, was born October 19, 1861 at Blur Grass,
Iowa. Due to the death of his mother when he was ten years old, he made
his home for a while with his uncle Perry Cooper. His
education was limited to grade school, as he started to make his own way
very young. When grown he came to Iowa and located in Pilot Grove
township, where he lived the rest of his life, with the exception of three
years in Sherman township. He was married at Red Oak, Iowa on
February 21, 1887 to Laura Ellen Bailey; daughter of Henry
Frailey and Minerva Jane [Cook] Bailey. They were definitely
pioneers, hard working farmers who struggled through raising a family of
nine children on the same farm they started out with. Laura Ellen
died at their farm home August 7, 1921, and Franklin died in
Elliott August 28, 1932. Both are buried in Pilot Grove Cemetery.
Children of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Curtis Craig:
1. Florence Vilena
born February 6, 1888 in Pilot Grove. She married Alfred Elmer Hallcock
at Red Oak, December 27, 1905. They lived their entire married life
in Pilot Grove. Elmer died December 16, 1935. Florence
married Riner Meyer December 24, 1941. She died September 13, 1967.
All are buried at Pilot Grove. Alfred and Florence were
parents of six daughters and two sons, all born in Pilot Grove Twp.;
Nora Myrle Hamlin, Pearl Chrisman, Stella Izola Inman, Lester Earl
Hallcock, Elsie Leola Zimmerman, Alma Ellen Fitzloff, Elvin Ellsworth
Hallcock and Doris Elaine Camp. They had 20 grandchildren.
2. Franklin Henry
born September 17, 1916. Married Ethel Lucille Selser at Council
Bluffs, Iowa December 13, 1916. They have a son Glee and a
grandson Curtis in California. Franklin died October 28,
1966. Ethel died September 7, 1978. They are buried at Red Oak.
3. Nora May was
born June 22, 1891 in Sherman township. She married Ealy Pogue
November 28, 1921 in Council Bluffs. The have a daughter, Frances
Burton. Ealy died January 26, 1975 at the Red Oak
Hospital.
4. Lela Jane,
was born in Sherman township February 1, 1893. Married June 12, 1943
in Red Oak to Harry Seder, who died July 12, 1948. Lela died
June 27, 1957 at the Ealy Pogue home. They are buried at Red
Oak.
5. Curtis Franklin
born January 19, 1896. Died April 1, 1904. Buried in Pilot Grove.
6. Wilbur Frailey,
born August 31, 1898. Married Hazel Juanita Stedwell June 12,
1920 at Red Oak. They have two daughters, Phyllis Lewis and
Bernice Dutcher, and three grandchildren.
7. Wilbur Fred,
born August 31, 1898. Married Ethel Rosina Hubbard at Elliott May
1, 1919. She died December 5, 1935. They had two children:
Charlene Hoover and Bernard Fred. Wilbur died July 7, 1972 in
Twin Falls, Idaho. They are buried at Hillside Cemetery, Elliott.
8. Howard Arthur
was born December 12, 1903. He married Vada Gammell August 4, 1926.
They were the parents of three sons: Harley, Garvin, and Arvid. Howard died October 24, 1970 at Twin Falls, Idaho and is buried
there.
9. Delbert Cleo
was born March 10, 1908. He graduated at Elliott in 1928. He married
Eleanor Frances Slyter October 14, 1929. They were the parents of
Lauretta Margaret, Laureen, and Larry. Delbert's
second marriage September 30, 1956 was to Novis May Runkle.
