CAREY

 

       John Absalom and Arminta Carey were the parents of five children: George, Frank, William, John and Edna.  Mr. Carey was a Civil War veteran. In the early 1870's they moved to Elliott, where the family grew up.

   George and his wife, Maude, moved to a farm near Lorimer, Iowa, where their two daughters were born. Pearl married Ora Berry and lived on a farm in the Lorimer vicinity. They retired to a home in Winterset to be near their son and daughter. After George's death Maude and daughter Ethel moved to Winterset. Ethel worked at the hospital several years.

    William became a barber and worked in Elliott, Red Oak, and later in Omaha. Will and his wife, Alta, were the parents of three sons, Harold, Donald and Edward, and two daughters, Laurel and Helen.

     Edna married Will Pepper. They made their home in Des Moines. They had two sons, Carl and Maynard and two daughters, Fern and Merle.

     John went to California  to make his home.  He and his wife Dr. Euna Carey had a daughter, Jacqueline.

     Frank Carey and Irene Saint were married March 28, 1897, and moved to a farm near Lowman Church, where Grace and Lela were born. In 1900 they moved into their home in south Elliott.  Here Nellie, Dale, Blanche and Leon were born. Frank worked for the railroad and at the elevator for many years. His only recreation was trap shooting, where he won many contests. Their child Grace died in 1913. For several years before his death in 1916, he was janitor at the schoolhouse and at the Christian Church. He continued to oversee the work at the schoolhouse, when he was unable to continue to work himself.  Frank died April 24 1916 at Iowa City. He was 47 years old.  After Frank's death Inez worked as a practical nurse. Inez died May 8, 1957.

    Lela worked in the local telephone office before going to Omaha, where she was employed as an operator by Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for over 40 years. 

   After Nellie graduated from high school, she went to Omaha to work. She married Fred Sawtelle and had a daughter Majorie.

   Marjorie married Kenneth Giles. They have three boys, Dale, William and Christopher and a daughter Connie. The Giles family live in Council Bluffs. Dale and his wife Marie have three daughters, Sara, Lisa and Jennifer. Bill and his wife Pamela live in Council Bluffs. Connie graduated from Wartburg College and works in Waverly, Iowa. Chris attends Lewis Central high school. Kenneth and Dale work in Omaha for Northwestern Bell. Marjorie is a librarian at the public library in Council Bluffs. .

   Blanche married Mike Sander from Villisca. He worked at the bakery there. Their two sons Max and Maurice and two daughters Elaine and Linda were born in Villisca. They moved to California in 1944. Max remained in Iowa and enlisted in the Navy. After World War II he attended Simpson College. While teaching at Lohrville, Iowa, he met Elgene Nolte who became his wife. They have a daughter Rebecca and son Blake. Max has been Superintendent of Schools at Cumberland-Massena for a number of years. Elgene teaches music in the school.

    Rebecca Sander attended Simpson College and N.W.M.S.U. She has a master's degree and teaches in Anita. Her husband Steve Pelzer is a teacher and coach at Elkhorn. They have a son, Aaron.

    Blake is a senior at N.W.M.S.U. at Marysville, Missouri.

    Elaine Sander married Don Hart. They have three sons and a daughter and live in Ventura, California.

    Linda (Sander) and Jim Reider live in Corona with their four sons.

    Maurice is a diesel mechanic and works in construction in the state of Washington.

    Leon married Lola Dotson. They have a daughter Patricia. They live in California.

    Dale married Ruth Blain in 1927. They have two sons, James and Marlin. James married Marjorie Hale and lives in California. They have one son, Charles who works as an electronic engineer in San Jose, Calif. Jim has an interest in the general contracting firm of Syblon and Reid at Folsom, Calif. Marlin married Norma Randall from Forest City, Missouri. After serving in the Marine Corps, Marlin taught in Fillmore and Mound City, Missouri. In 1957 they moved to Michigan. Marlin now teaches and coaches in Livonia, Mich. He has a B.S. from N.W.M.S.U. & Master's from Michigan State. Norma works as a secretary in one of the Livonia Junior High Schools. Marlin and Norma have two daughters, Marla and Nancy. Maria is a teacher and Norma have two daughters, Marla and Nancy. Marla is a teacher and Norma has two daughters, Marla and Nancy. Marla is a teacher in Livonia. Nancy and her husband Jack Welch have a son, Kurt Marlin.
