ROBERT L. CAIN and NELLIE TYLER
Nellie
Gertrude Tyler was born 26 Oct. 1878 at Ottumwa, Ia., youngest
daughter of T. D. Tyler and Sarah Ann Wall,
died 18 Feb. 1911 at Manitou, Colo. She married Bob Cain
16 Feb. 1908 at Newkirk, Okla. Nellie worked for eight years
after leaving Simpson College where she was a voice student at the
Conservatory. Her special talent as a hat trimmer (milliner) soon became
apparent and she opened her own Millinery Shop at Kaw City. Her
husband was employed at Wolfe Bros. Clothing store at Newkirk until they
moved to Kaw City. In 1910, her health had worsened from tuberculosis, and Robert took her to Manitou for the beneficial mountain air then
prescribed. Nellie asked to be brought "back home to Elliott" for
burial in Elliott's Hillside Cemetery. After the funeral, Robert
returned to Newkirk, and later remarried. Contact with Nellie's
family was then lost.
