LEROY BAKER
LeRoy
Lawerence Baker was born November 19, 1915 in Sherman Twp., the son
of Warren C. and Maude Petty Baker. He attended Stennett
Consolidated Schools, graduating in 1934. He married R. Elizabeth
Penwell at Red Oak, July 24, 1936. She was the daughter of David C.
and Eva Cynthia Penwell of the Stennett vicinity. She was born in
Montgomery County, February 16, 1919 and attended country grade
schools near Mortons Mill and graduated from high school at Stennett
in 1936. They lived at Stennett where LeRoy drove trucks for his
brother Floyd for several years, farmed a few years south of Elliott
and south of Mortons Mill before moving to Elliott in 1947. At this
time he purchased trucking interests from Victor Godfrey and
continued in this business for nearly 25 years, going from the
straight trucks to truck and pup, to the ‘semis’ to the ‘pots’. At
various times during these years LeRoy served on the City Council,
as volunteer fireman and as Fire Chief.
During
these years four children were born: Jerald, Joy, Marlin (stillborn)
and Elizabeth Ann.
Jerry was
married March 23, 1963 to Lois Wardell of Washington State,
following his discharge from the Navy. He began his work with the
National Forest Service at that time and is living presently at
Stone Mt., Georgia. They have two children, Leslie Ann and David.
Joy was
married to Thomas Shellberg Feb. 6, 1960 and they live at Elliott
with their six daughters: Catherine, Patricia, Teresa, Tamara, Linda
and Jacalyn.
Ann
was married to Robert Myers of Griswold on Oct. 10, 1966. They have
two children, James and Rachel. They live presently at Afton, Ia.,
where they are associated with the school system.
