Century Farms

Since the land of Iowa was opened to settlers in 1833, agriculture has been the heart of Iowa. The family farm represents the traditions and heritage upon which Iowa was built. Those individuals and families who followed in the foot steps of their ancestors continue to produce crops and livestock on that same land. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, with the endorsement of the Iowa American Revolution Bicentennial Commission sponsors the Iowa Century Farms Program. This program began in 1976 as part of the Bicentennial Celebration and recognizes and honors individuals who have owned the farm land for 100 years or more. Over 5,000 certificates and farm markers were distributed acoss Iowa at local ceremonies.

There is an application process which must be completed. Applications are obtained from the Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship. Awards are presented in a special ceremony at the Iowa State Fair each year in recognition to a family who has had the farm for 100 years.
