He was reared on a farm and received such an education as our common schools provide. His early years were spent upon a farm, with the exception of two years, which he spent in a gristmill.

He was married March 10, 1880, to Nettie E. Stillman, who was born in Jersey City, N. J., April 16, 1861. They have two children – Claude E. and Roy C. In March, 1883, Mr. Stokes purchased 200 acres of fine farmland, and was extensively engaged in stock raising and dairying.
