George Lea Plummer

1909-1982

George Lea Plummer was born in Lime Springs, Iowa on October 9, 1909, the son of Dr. Herbert W. Plummer and Anna (Postle) Plummer. George graduated from Lime Springs high school and attended the College of Engineering at Iowa State University in Ames.

He married Laura Zwerneman, of Lyle, Minnesota, on June 21, 1935. They had two children. One son who died in infancy, and a daughter, Laurel, who married Duane Kimber. Laura was born on June 14, 1910. She died in September of 1987.

George entered the U.S. Army in February, 1943, and served for two and a half years. Six months of his service were in the Rhineland Campaign. He was honorably discharged from the Army in December 1945.

George and Laura moved to St. Ansgar in 1950, and he began working for the Globe Gazette newspaper in Mason City, where he was employed as a contract newspaper hauler until his retirement in 1966. George was also employed for several years by "Andy" Anderson as a projectionist at the Roxy Theatre in St. Ansgar, and also at the Bel-Air "Fly-in Drive-In" theatre. George enjoyed sneaking neighbor kids into the drive-in by hiding them in his back seat, and driving in the exit. The neighbor kids enjoyed sneaking into the theatre and driving in the exit.

For many years George's hobby was amateur radio. His call sign was WøYGG--"Young Giggling Girl". In 1957 he tuned in Sputnik I, the first earth satellite. During the 1950's he and the family had moved to a duplex--part of the old Hume house--on fourth street between Main and Jefferson. It was a large, two story house with a basement. Initially he had his radio equipment in the basement, and later in the garage southwest of the house. He enjoyed showing off his equipment to the neighbor kids.

For a time, in the early 60's, he was the "adult advisor" for the St. Ansgar Rocket Society (SARS), at least until he realized the responsibilities and liabilities involved, should a rocket blow up and kill one of the kids in the club.

George died on February 2, 1982, and was buried in the Newburg Township cemetery east of Carpenter.

Laura died in September, 1987.
