Mabel Penney
by Marilynn Reis
Mabel was born on October 23, 1902 the second oldest child of Oliver and Anna Larson in a country home near Mona, Iowa, where she lived and completed her schooling. Mabel was confirmed in the church at Mona. Mabel has three sisters, Lulu Jorgenson, Lillian Gunderson, both of Osage and Irene Stromley who also is a resident of Faith Home. Mabel’s only brother* died at a very early age. Mabel came to Osage to live and be with her cousin Alma Larson. Her first job was clerking in the Home Bakery. She later clerked at the Beehive Department. She went to work in the Daylight Store when it first opened and continued with that employment until her marriage to Hartley Penney June 14, 1928. Hartley and his brother Earl owned Penney Brothers Auto Supply Store which they operated in Osage for 47 years. Hartley and Mabel became parents of one son, David, who passed away at the age of six months. In 1943 they adopted Richard 7½ and Ann 5½**. Hartley passed away in May 1965. Hartley and Mabel brought the Sam Penney home on north seventh street in Osage where they lived for many years. They had seven grand-children. Hartley passed away in May 1965 and on July 27, 1978 Mabel came to make her home at Faith Home. Mabel states, “I love it at Faith and I thank the Lord that I can live here. The entire staff is so kind and willing to help us. The meals are good and our rooms and clothing are kept very clean. I appreciate hearing services direct from my church each Sunday without going out the door, we also have so much other fine entertainment. We should all be thankful for Faith Home.” Faith Home is also thankful for the sunshine spread throughout the home by Mabel, she is a friend to everyone and very willing to assist the staff or residents in anyway possible. |
