Biographical Sketch of

William Nicol

William Nicol, was born in Scotland on May 22, 1803. He was a farmer almost all of his life. William came to the United States in 1819, and settled first in Hammond, St. Lawrence County, New York, where he engaged in farming until 1860.

At that time William moved to Mitchell County, in northern Iowa, locating his family in Union Township--where he resided until his death, which occurred in October of 1885.

It should be noted that William and Margaret resided in Dickinson County, Iowa, during the time from 1869 to 1875, approximately. This they did to "prove up" a homestead.

William was an exemplary citizen and was a good member of the Methodist Episcopal Church throughout his life. William had married Margaret Pollock, who was born in Scotland in February of 1808. Margaret continued to live on the old homestead in Mitchell County, following William's passing.

William and Margaret had several children, including Martha, and Robert B. who lived in Dickinson County, Iowa.
