Biographical Sketch of

George Samuel Coon

George Samuel Coon grew up in Mitchell county, and was born in Osage, Iowa. He was the son of Samuel and Ellen (Connor) Coon; and received his basic education at Cedar Valley Seminary in Osage, Iowa, and then attended the University of Iowa, in Iowa City.

George studied medicine at the University of Iowa and earned a Medical Doctor degree in 1891. He then studied medicine at the Chicago Homeopathic Medical College, from which he then graduated in 1892, with another M.D. degree. He interned at Cook County Hospital in Chicago from 1892 to 1894.

After that he has was a professor of surgery at the Southwestern Homeopathic Medical College, a surgeon at the Southwestern Homeopathic Hospital, a surgeon at the Methodist Deaconess Hospital, and finally a surgeon and the Louisville City Hospital, Louisville, Kentucky. He was also president of the Kentucky State Homeopathic Association, president of the Southern Homeopathic Medical Society, and a member of the American Institute of Homeopathy. George was also a member of the Elk, Odd Fellows and Masonic lodges.
