Edward Charles Clark

1872-1938

Edward Charles Clark was born February 27, 1872 in rural Mitchell County, Iowa to Thomas and Jane (Tibbits) Clark. He was the 9th child and first son born to Thomas and Jane. Thus he was named after both of his grandfathers, Edward Tibbits and Charles Clark.

Uncle Ed, as he was affectionately called, grew to adulthood in Mitchell County and on February 2, 1908 he was united in marriage to Miss Marion Haydon.

Marion was born in Birmingham England, December 29, 1868 to Frederick and Emma (Dilks) Haydon.

In 1900, Marion's father died at Minneapolis Minnesota, and she, along with her mother and sisters relocated to Osage. In 1908, 10 months after her marriage to Edward, Marion's mother Emma married the widowed Daniel Lombard. Daniel Lombard had been married to Edward's oldest sister, Margaret Ann Clark. Edward's brother-in-law became his step-father-in-law.

Thus, Edward's nieces and nephews were now Marion's stepsisters and stepbrothers.

Edward died December 23, 1938 at Osage, presumably of heart problems.

Sometime after Ed's death, Marion moved in with her sister Nell (Haydon) Barton. My mother Phyllis (Tubbs) McAlister remembers

as a young girl when Aunt Mae and Aunt Nell lived next door to her in Osage. She said that Mae and Nell were "quite the ladies." They had been brought up with a very proper English background and had tea every afternoon. They had their "morning clothes," and after a short afternoon nap, would change into their "afternoon clothes" so, although they were very prim and proper, they were in no way snobbish.

Aunt Mae, Aunt Nell, and my Grandma Gladys Tubbs were not just related but were also good friends. When Mae became ill, she gave my Grandma her set of dishes that had come over with her family from England. I now have those dishes and cherish them very much.

Aunt Mae died July 23, 1958 at Osage.
