February 1878: "Know all men by these Presents that I, Nelson CONE of
said county being the head of a family, have set off, marked, and
called as my Homestead, the tract of land hereinafter described,
situated in Mahaska County, Iowa, and by these Presents give notice to
all whom it may concern, that I hold and intend to hold the same as my
Homestead, exempt from Judicial Sale, pursuant to the Statue in such
case made and provided. Description of Homestead: Beginning at center
of Section 34 Twp 74 NR 17W running thence, North 20 chains to
Northwest corner of SW 1/4 of said Section 34, thence East 15
chains; thence South 20 chains; thence West 15 chains to the place of
beginning, being the West 3/4 of SW 1/4 NE 1/4 of Section 34-74-17.
Also the South East quarter of the South East quarter of the North West
quarter of Section 34 Twp 74 NR 17 W. Containing in all 40 acres, the
Dwelling House is on W 3/4 of SW 1/4 of said Section 34 or SW corner of
SW 1/4 NE 1/4 of Section 34.

North of the South East corner of North East quarter of South West
quarter of Section 34 Twp 74 NR 17 W. Running thence N. 67 W. 8 chains
& 25 links N23E. 1 chain & 25 links, thence S 67 E 7 chains
& 75 links; thence South 1 chain & 35 links to the place of
