Mahaska County Cemeteries

Muchakinock

Section 13 East Des Moines Township

Cemetery Status: Abandoned. Located on private property. Only about 25 readable markers remain in 2024.

History: The town of Muchakinock was organized in 1874 by H. W. and W. A. MCNEIL to accommodate the housing needs of area coal miners. A large percentage of the miners were African-American, with some Native Americans. At its peak, Muchakinock had a population of between 1500 and 1800 inhabitants. By 1904, mining operations had begun to decline, and most miners moved on to new areas. The 4-acre cemetery remains as a memorial to the diverse culture of the coal mining era of southern Iowa.

★ denotes that a grave marker is present.
