Hon. ANDREW GAMBLE, a prominent banker of our county, and now residing in Columbus City, was born on the 1st day of August, 1816, in Belmont County, Ohio. He was the youngest of eight children whose parents were Wm. Gamble and Margaret Nixon. His father was a farmer by occupation, and died in Belmont County, Ohio, in 1824. His mother died in this county.

The early education of Andrew was very limited, and he was early taught to labor. At the age of thirteen, he was thrown on his own resources, without money, but with moral habits and a healthy body. The occupation of a laborer on the farm he followed from this time till he was about twenty-four years of age. He now went to school for a couple of years, and then began teaching school, which occupation engrossed his time and energies for a space of about six years.

In 1835, he went to Union County, Ind., and was elected sheriff of that county in 1845. In 1847, he came to this county and located on section 29, town 76, range 6, in Union Township. He resided there as a farmer till 1854. During the time of his residence in Union Township, he represented our county in the Legislature for one term. In 1854, he left Louisa County and moved to Keithsburg, Ill., where he remained for a year and a-half in mercantile pursuits. He then moved to Columbus City, in this county, where he has since resided, and where in all probability he will pass the balance of his days.

On coming here from Keithsburg, he turned his attention to mercantile pursuits, and also performed the duties of a justice of the peace. In 1872, he went into the banking business in Columbus City, and this has occupied his attention and energies ever since. On the 17th day of January, 1854, he was united in marriage to Evan Colton, a native of Pennsylvania, and a daughter of Patrick Colton, who was one of the early settlers of this county, coming here in 1842, and settling in Union Township. Mr. Gamble is the father of ten children, nine of whom are living. Politically, he is a strong republican at an early date belonged to the Jackson Democracy. Religiously, his views are not circumscribed by the doctrines of any particular church; but he is in sympathy a Presbyterian. Socially, he is pleasant and affable, and is a man of great influence in his community. He has been a member of the board of supervisors of this county for the last six years.
