The County Home, Louisa County 1856-1974, painted by Bernard Gajewski

On Dec. 29, 1856, the County Court purchased 200 acres of land at a cost of $4,000.10 for the purpose of providing a home for paupers. Soon afterwards, a county building was erected for $2,500. In November 1899, the Board of Supervisors submitted to the people a proposition  to levy a tax for the purpose of constructing a fireproof building and improvements on the County Farm for the proper care of the poor of the county.
