Robert Conn 24th Iowa, Co. E

Robert Conn, the son of Robert and Mary Conn, was born around the year 1836, most likely in Defiance, Wayne County, Ohio. His parents were natives of Ireland or England.

Little is known about Robert, except that he moves to Iowa, farmed, and sold merchandise. His wife's name was Adeline (Hanna) Conn, and they had seven children, among them, patent lawyer Andrew Conn, who was born on December 3, 1860 and eventually married Miss Edith Russell.

On August15, 1862, at the age of 26, he enlisted in the 24th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment, and on August 28, 1862, he was mustered in as 5th Sergeant of Company E. Throughout the course of the war, he was promoted twice: first to 4th Sergeant on September 3, 1863, and then to 3rd Sergeant on December 16, 1864. He mustered out with the regiment on July17, 1865, in Savannah, Georgia.

He returned to Iowa, and eventually moved to 1537 1st Ave., in Cedar Rapids, after the war. His wife, Adeline, lived from august 18, 1841, to only March 20, 1895. Robert died on June 5, 1917, and was buried on June 7, 1917, in Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. He is buried in Lot 3 of the 15th Block of the 2nd Addition of Linwood, next to his wife and his daughter, Bertha.
