Charles Fleek 24^th Iowa, Co. G

Charles Fleek was born around the year 1839 in Indiana. Very little is known about him, except that he moved to Cedar Rapids sometime before his twenty-third birthday, which was when he enlisted in the 24^th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The regiment was raised during the first two weeks of August, 1862, and Charles enlisted on August 13, 1862 as a 6^th Corporal. He mustered into the Regiment on September 3, 1862.

He remained with the 24^th Iowa only a short time, eight months at the most, but most likely took part in General Grant's Coldwater Expedition and the Vicksburg Campaign, which occupied the winter and spring of 1863. Charles took sick sometime during or after these campaigns, and died of disease in St. Louis, Missouri on June 14, 1863. His body remained in Missouri, and was buried in the National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks (section 2, grave 156). A government marker was placed in his memory at Oak Hill Cemetery, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The marker is in (14-1-S 1/2), between the graves of Captain Ezra Van Metre and Lieutenant Henry Fleek.
