Daniel W. Vance 24th Iowa, Co. G

Daniel W. Vance was born in 1834 in Virginia. With his parents and his brother, George W. Vance, he moved to Kingston City, Iowa. He married a woman named Emily L., and when he turned 28, he enlisted in the 24th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

He enlisted on August 14, 1862, and mustered into the Regiment as a private on September 3, 1862. Daniel was wounded on May 16, 1863 in the battle of Champion's Hill, Mississippi. On May 31, 1863, he died of his wounds and was buried in Vicksburg, Mississippi. A marker was placed in Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to commemorate his death, but his body remained in Vicksburg. His marker was placed in the 17th Lot of the 8th Block of the Original Addition.
