Jackson County 1850 Mortality Census

This is at the bottom of the list of names on the 1850 Jackson County Mortality schedule:

"Well divided between timber and prairie land, and is bountifully supplied with pure sunning water -- the fertility of the soil -- the many valuable water privileges together with the fine timber and also Iron ore that is found on the surface in lumps of a tons weight and the prospect of Lead ore ??? this county to be one of the best in the State. The timber adjacent to water courses is princepall and white oak, hickory and pin oak -- The principle towns are Bellevue, Andrew, Maquoket, Canton & Sabula. Bellevue is the present County seat and is situated on the Mississippi. It is noted for striking the first blow in ridding the county of a notice set of Horse Thieves and Robbers that infested the North West in 38 - 39 and 40. The location is a good one and the town bids fair to be a place of some importance. Andrew is near te geographical centre of the County surrounded by a fine healthy country and is the location of the Normal School.
Maquoketa, "the land of steady habits" near the forks of the Maquoketa Mines is beautifully on a fine rolling prairie and surrounded by the finest agricultural heart of our County. This county is noted for its health; the prevalent diseases are those to which all new countries are more or less subject to wit. Billious & Intermittent Fevers. Supposed to be chiefly by decay of superabundance of vegetable matter.
It will be seen that pneumonia is the most fatal disease that prevail with us. We attribute this fatality to want of skill in our Pysicians."
