  I received the information below from another county coordinator.  I thought it might be of some value to those of you who are looking for death certificates.  I do disagree with the length of time it takes to get a copy of a record, I had sent for one on my family and it only took about 2 weeks.

     Iowa has a state-wide index of deaths from 1904 to 1916. This is a critical period because many deaths were not recorded at the county level during those years. The index is on microfiche at the State Historical Library & Archives. As far as I know, you have to go there in person (or have somebody do it for you) to access the
microfiche.  From the microfiche you can retrieve the death certificate number. With that number you can request a copy from the Archivist for the copying cost (25 cents per page).  The alternative is to send your $10 to the State Bureau of Vital Records and wait a few months for a response (and they require the county and quite a bit of other information).  I am aware of no other state-wide death indices.
