Martin, Gertrude E. nee Fisher 1909 - 2002LAWLER -- Gertrude E. Martin, 93, Cedar Rapids, formerly of Lawler, died Sunday at Hallmar, Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids of natural causes. A Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 6 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Lawler with Rev. Marvin Salz and Rev. Peter Bodensteiner celebrating the mass. The pall was placed on the casket by her five children. Lector for the service was Joe Scally. The offertory gifts were presented by her granddaughters. Interment was in the church cemetery with Tom Kelly, Steve Kelly, Mike Herold, Pat Herold, Tim Herold, David Martin and Jeff Martin as pallbearers. Visitation was 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 5 at Hugeback Funeral Home, Lawler where there was a 4 p.m. Catholic Daughters of Americas Rosary and a 7 p.m. Scripture Service. Gertrude was born March 21, 1909 in Lawler, the daughter of Louis and Mary Etta (Hand) Fisher. She attended rural country school and was a Lawler High School graduate. On April 6,1930 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church she married Paul Vincent "Dint" Martin. Following their marriage the couple owned and operated the family business, known as the Martin Cafe in Lawler until 1970. Gertrude was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the American Legion Aux, the Commercial Club, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and Rosary Society Gertrude enjoyed reading, baking and cooking and was well known for her pies. Survivors include three sons, Jim (Ann) Martin, Cedar Rapids, William (Cindy) Martin, New Brighton, MN and Donald (Peggy), Land O'Lakes, FL; two daughters, Marietta (Mike) Kelly, Cedar Rapids and Paula (Ron) Herold, White Bear Lake, MN; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill (Colleen) Fisher, Temperance, MI; one sister, Peg Hager, LaPorte City; two sisters-in-law, ‘ Charlotte Fisher, Benicia, CA and Ruth Fisher, Aplington. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Paul, in 1994; one daughter, Joan; three brothers, Paul, Chris and George Fisher and two sisters, Leone Moody and Edith Conway.
