Heying, Leo John 1911 - 2002ALTA VISTA -- Leo Heying, 91, Alta Vista, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at Colonial Manor, Elma of natural causes. Funeral Services were 11 a.m. Monday, June 3 at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Alta Vista with Reverend John Hemann presiding. Sara Recker was the organist and accompanied the vocalists, John and Dave Osterman singing "How Great Thou Art" ana "Amazing Grace", and the St. Bernard Men's Choir singing "The Prayer of St. Francis", "On Eagle's Wings" and "The Lord's Prayer". The lector was Sally Grober. Andy Grober was the Eucharistic Minister. Sondra, Karen, Judy and Bev Heying Presented the offertory gifts. Leo's granddaughters placed the pall. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Alta Vista with Leo's grandsons serving as casket bearers and the granddaughters serving as honorary casket bearers. Visitation was from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 2 at Conway-kolbet Funeral Home, Elma, where there was a 4 p.m. Rosary and 7 p.m. Scripture Service. Visitation was also an hour prior to services at the church. Leo John Heying was born May 13, 1911 in St. Cecelia, the son of John Herman and Christina (Glaser) Heying. He attended St. Williams Catholic School in Alta Vista. After his schooling he worked as a farm laborer for the neighbors for a short time before riding the freight train to California, where he stayed for one year. When he returned to the Alta Vista area he returned to working as a farm laborer. On Jan. 11, 1938 he was united in marriage to Velda Webb at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Alta Vista. After their marriage the couple farmed in the Alta Vista area until moving to New Hampton in 1948. The couple returned to the family farm near Alta Vista in 1951. The couple then moved to Alta Vista in 1974 where he was currently residing. He was a member of the St. Bernard Catholic Church, Alta Vista. He enjoyed going downtown to play cards, going to the Senior Citizens lunches and watching, the Chicago Cubs. Survivors include two daughters, Lois (Don) Vorwald, Toledo and Mary (Gary) Elliott, Charles City; five sons, John (Sondra) Conway, AR, Bob (Karen) Kewanee, IL, Edward (Judy), Chandler, AZ, Leon (Beverly), Cedar Rapids, Thomas, Elma; 22 grandchildren; 25 great-grana-children; two great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Bernard Heying, Benton, WI and Billy (Peggy) Gourley, San Jacinto, CA and two sisters, Rosie Bach, Beloit, WI and Lillian Osterman, Garrison, MN. Preceding him in death were, his parents; his wife, Velda, in 1998; two grandsons, Neil and Randy Vorwald; three brothers, Charlie, Harold and Joseph and a sister, Angela Marshall.
