2. WALTER2 CREW (MICAJAH1) was born Dec 28, 1784 in Cedar Creek, Hanover county, Virginia (Source: William Wade Hinshaw Index, Salem Meetings.). He married SARAH B. RICE, daughter of WILLIAM RICE and TEMPERANCE UNKNOWN. She was born Abt. 1803 in England, and died Sep 26, 1863 (Source: William Wade Hinshaw Index, Salem Meetings, p. 88.).

Notes for WALTER CREW:

Notes from A Place of Peace, Memories of Salem, Iowa 1835-1996 p 162:

Friend by birth.

In 1849 Walter sold his Virginia homestead and with his family, consisting of fourteen children, made his way to Salem, Iowa. In 1850 the family moved to a new house.

Walter Crew was a great lover of books, a man of much general information. He was unusually well read and inculcated on his children a systematic course of daily reading, prescribing books and subjects for them to study. He inherited many books from his father and had an unusually complete library. These books were shipped to St. Louis where he intended to send for them when he settled in Iowa. Unfortunately they reached St. Louis, just before the great fire in that city in 1849, and were all consumed. The loss was great to Mr. Crew as he was never fully able to replace them.

Educated at the common schools, except one year spent at the seminary at Salem.

For many years M.L. taught school in winter and farmed in summer. For several winters he was Principal of the public school in Salem. In 1870 he purchased a homestead near Salem and gave up teaching, devoting himself to farming. Unlike most reared in the Friends' Church, he took an active interest in politics and advocated the principles of the Republican party. In 1881 he was elected to represent the county in the Nineteenth General Assembly. While a member of the House, he labored to promote the interests of agriculture. he gave support to a bill abolishing the use of free passes by the officials of the State. He also supported a bill prohibiting a greater charge by the railroad companies for a short haul than a long one, for the same class of freight. He voted for the prohibition of the sale of intoxicating liquors. He opposed what he believed to be a diversion of the Agricultural College from the purposes for which it was endowed. He favored daily manual labor as one of its distinguishing features. he sough by bill the adoption of a uniform system of test-books for the public schools. It contained a provision by which pupils could obtain text books at wholesale prices. The following year he took part in the canvass for the adoption of the Constitutional Amendment and in 1883 was unanimously renominated for Representative on this platform. The two other parties united and nominated W.I. Babb, a distinguished lawyer.

Mrs. Crew shared M.L.'s love of books and the long winters on the farm were occupied reading aloud, each family member taking part.

Notes for PETER J SMITH:

Listed as farmer on Henry Co. 1850 Census. 1870 census farmer in Marion Twp, Henry Co, IA. Real estate and personal property both 5,000.

Portrait and Biographical Album of Henry County, Iowa, 1888:

Peter Smith, a stock-raiser and farmer residing on section 28, Marion Township was born July 12, 1830, in Switzerland County, Indiana and is a son of Abraham and Eleanor (Van Dorin) Smith, the former a native of North Carolina, born 19 May 1794, and the latter August 10, 1800 in Pennsylvania. The earlier years of Peter were spent in attending the common schools in the state of Indiana and doing his part of the farm work. Born upon a farm, the greater part of his life has been spent in peaceful avocation of a farmer. He remained with his parents until 1853, when he made the overland trip to California, where he remained but a short time, then went to Oregon, and for two years was there engaged in farming. Returning to California, for about fourteen months he engaged in mining, and then went to freighting in California, Oregon, Idaho, and Washington Territory, but later engaged in stock-raising in Oregon, and for a time in merchandising. He was very successful in the far West, remaining there until 1868, when he returned to Henry County and purchased eighty acres of land, a portion of the farm on which he now resides.

In 1883 he bought ninety acres more, making 170 acres, which is now under a fine state of cultivation. Mr. Smith is a successful stock-raiser, his stock consisting principally of fine Poland China hogs and Durham cattle. Everything that he made was by his own industry. On the 26th of April, 1869, Mr. Smith was united in marriage with Miss Lucy B. Crew, daughter of Walter and Sarah (Rice) Crew. She was born Aug 18, 1844, near Richmond, Virginia. Five children have been born to them... Mrs. Smith is a member of the Society of Friends. In politics he is a Democrat. As a citizen he stands high in the estimation of all. He is always ready to advance any interest for the public good.

From the Mount Pleasant Free Press, 16 April 1903

Peter J. Smith

We were greatly surprised to learn of the sudden death of Peter J. Smith, which occurred Sunday morning, April 12, 1903, at his home west of town. It was but a few days ago that he was a pleasant caller at the Free Press office, giving us all a pleasant friendly greeting. He seldom came to town that he did not make us a visit and for many years our business relations, as well as social relations, have been very pleasant.

P.J. Smith was born in the state of Indiana, July 12, 1830. He was therefore in the 73rd year of his age at the time of his death. In 1853, Mr. Smith, the 23 years of age, made the overland trip to California. From there he soon after went to Oregon and engaged in farming. Next he returned to California and for more than a year was engaged in mining. He next engaged in freighting in California, Oregon, Idaho and Washington Territory. Later he settled in Oregon and interested himself in stock raising and then in merchandise. After fifteen years thus employed in the far West, he came to Henry county in 1868 and purchased a farm in Marion township, where he lived many years.

Mr. Smith was married to Miss Lucy B. Crew April 26, 1869. This twain had five children born to them, three of whom are now living.

Mr. Smith had the respect and esteem of all who knew him. He was intelligent, well informed on all current topics, conscientious in his relation to others, industrious and in all respects reliable. The family have the sympathy of friends and Mrs. Smith, the bereaved widow, is a member of the Society of Friends and after the funeral the remains were taken to Salem for interment.
