April
23.
Dear
Mary & Fred,
Your
letter of Apr. 17 rec. last night as Herbert came over here.
His company went on guard Sun. night and Herb being on K.P. that
day let him off as they can’t be at 2 places.
So he won’t have to do guard work for a couple of weeks but on
Tue. Nights they have night drill and Wed. & Fri. nights they have a
little school so it keeps him there most of the time.
Rec.
your letters of 15 & 16 also and got the draft alright and many thanks
for the dollar. You sure
are doing more than your share.
I just
got up. Haven’t got
breakfast yet. Herb left
at 4:30. It is seven
o’clock now. We are well
and hope the same of you all.
Did Lena Prohaska ever tell you that she got a letter from me.
I wrote her on the 9th of Apr. and if she did not
call you, why you ask her if she did not get it.
If she didn’t she better see their mail mail [mail man?] or post
master and find out what becomes of their mail.
I told her whenever I wrote to one they should let the rest know
also so you know how we are.
Yes it
was sad news indeed. I
could not realize it myself at first.
I think I wrote you all about it in the other letter which I
wrote you the 17th.
I did not think that you were writing to me at that same time.
Yes, Herbert is glad I am here but now he is afraid I will get
lonesome or homesick and want to go back.
Julia
wrote me that Willie Farrell died.
We were sure surprized [sic] to hear about Asmus being called to
Camp Dodge. We spoke of
him one day last week and Herbert said he wondered if he went get and I
told him the last I heard he was mail carrier.
And Herb said I suppose he is one of those lucky sons of
bitches. Did any from
around home have to go.
I can
imagine Eleonora running around there.
Suppose she has forgotten me by this time.
You don’t need to send my needlecraft unless there are some nice
crochet lace patterns in it.
Then you can cut them out & send them with your letters.
I always got 2 copies and handed one to Lena Mueller but you
don’t need to bother.
Mabey [sic] I’ll be back some time.
There is one in the box upstairs which I wanted to hand to her.
It still has the wrapper on I think.
But I did not get to give it to her.
I forgot to tell you Lena said any time you wanted that lace
pattern like I started for her you can have the book.
We will take as good care of ourselves as we can and you all do
the same.
Say
Mary, if you haven’t told Mrs. Wedemeyer what I wrote you about Emil
having appendicitis & pneumonia why then don’t tell her.
After I got through reading your letter and you wanted me to
write all about it Herb said I shouldn’t say anything about that what I
heard as it might cause trouble.
I didn’t seem to think that way and he seemed to be pretty
worried about it and said if it got back here again it would be running
these doctors down & they would trace it and it might make things bad.
And they would probably open all my letters or make me go home.
I didn’t tell Herb I had already written it or I guess he
wouldn’t have any rest if he knew it so I didn’t tell him that I had
written it to you already.
So just drop it if you haven’t told her and if you have then tell her
not to spread it any more than possible and be sure and not write it or
any thing back here. Guess
I will have to be more carefull [sic] what I write.
Herbert always tells me stuff and then says don’t write it
though as we hain’t supposed to let anything out.
But I have wrote quite a few things but if I get over there I’ll
have to be mighty careful.
And don’t say anything about what he said about the uniform.
If he finds out I wrote all that he won’t have any rest or tell
me anything anymore. I
enclose a few flowers and also the map of the road we traveled over and
I also marked the forts as good as I can find them with F. –C -& W. -
Why did
Will Paul have to go see Farrell for.
That mail man sure can do most anything to make a feller wait
for the mail.
Met
another Ia. girl but she is going home this evening.
The 2 Ia. ladies that live upstairs and this Emma Dreger (the
one that is going home) and myself all went to the park yesterday.
Also out on the beach and imagine me out there.
We had a pleasant afternoon and it sure was a pretty day.
Nice today also this morning.
We are going to take a walk to Worden to get some things we
need. There is a place at
each Fort where the soldiers wives can get their things lots cheaper.
Others can’t buy there, it’s just for the soldiers and their
families. It’s like
highway robbery to buy here at Townsend.
Well I
must ring off for this morning.
Hope this finds you as well as it leaves us.
