Marvin R. West of 1659 Eighth St NW, died Wednesday morning in St Luke's
Hospital after a brief illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Turner Chapel West
where friends may call from 9 to 7 p.m. today. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park
Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Myrtle; two daughters (names omitted), two
sons (names omitted), two sisters (names omitted), and a brother (name omitted).
Also surviving are many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was employed
at the Sanitary Dairy Farm as a dairyman until his retirement in 1969. After his
retirement he worked for St Luke's Hospital in the laundry department He was born
April 14 1904, in Paris, MO, and Myrtle Goodall on Oct 5, 1925, in Tipton. He was
a member of Mizpah Lodge 694, Teamsters Union Local 298 and Olivet Presbyterian Church.
The Rev. Michael Chamberlain of Olivet Presbyterian Church will officiate.

General: Marvin R. West was born in Paris, MO in 1904. He moved with his family
to West Branch, IA in 1908. After finishing eighth grade in school he went to work
on a local farm to help support his seven brother and sisters. Here he learned
first hand about the dairy business, hand milking a herd of cows, cooling and
preparing the day's milk for the trip to town. Little did he know that he would
spend the rest of his life in the dairy product industry. Marvin moved to Cedar
Rapids, IA in 1919, working at the "Pinick & Ford Starch Works" and then at the
"Rock Island Railroad" roundhouse. At a chance meeting of an employee of the
"Wright Brothers Dairy" while walking along third Avenue West, he found that
there was an opening for an honest, hard working young man to deliver milk,
house to house by horse and wagon. He hurried over to meet with Mr. Wright and
was able to convince him that he wanted the job very badly. Mr. Wright soon
found out that Marvin had experience handling horses, so he was also give the
task of tending the horses after hours for a few extra dollars per week. Marvin
later started working inside the dairy at various jobs in the processing of the
milk products. He spent almost forty-seven years in the dairy business,
becoming proficient at every job within the plant. The Wright Brothers Dairy
eventually was sold to the Blue Valley Creamery Co., and Marvin stayed on as one
of the faithful employees during the depression years. Things were tough but
there was a pay check coming in each week to feed the four young West kids at
home. Many happy times were spent as a family, going to Company picnics,
watching Dad and others play softball and free basketball games at Quaker
Oats. Blue Valley was later sold to the Redel family from Minnesota. A new
plant was built to the north of the existing plant and the grand opening of
Sanitary Farm Dairies was held in 1939. Life long friends who had worked
together, both at Wright Brothers and Blue Valley, continued on with Sanitary
for a number of years. Marvin West retired in 1969 at age 65 after spending
almost 47 years putting dairy products on the tables of Cedar Rapids residence.
He was a member of the MIZPAH Mosonic Lodge AM & FM No. 369. in Cedar Rapids, IA.

MARION: Myrtle M. West, 92, a resident Linn Manor Care Center, died there Monday,
Feb. 14 1997, after a lingering illness. Services: 11 am. Thursday, Cedar Memorial
Chapel of Memories Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Paul Uzel of Olivet Presbyterian Church.
Burial Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m.
today at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, and after 10 am. Thursday at the
chapel. Survivors include two daughters, a sister; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren;
and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by seven brothers, a sister and
three great-grand-grandchildren. Myrtle was born Oct. 5 1904, in Cedar County, the
daughter of Walter and Martha Griffis Goodall. She married Marvin R. West Sr. on 5 Oct 1925,
in Tipton. He died in April 1982. Myrtle was a homemaker and a member of 0livet Presbyterian
Church and the Seniors Group and Women's Circle. Memorial donations may be given to Time
Check Senior Citizens Center or Ellis Boys and Girls Club.

2002, in Mercy Medical Center following a lingering illness.
Services: 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation
Service, Cedar Rapids, by Rev John Elliot. Military rites by Hanford Post 5.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood
Cemetery, at a later date.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years [name omitted]; his four children
[names omitted]; two sisters [names omitted]; a brother [name omitted]; and
two loving dogs. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson,
Elliott Fitkin; a granddaughter, Stacey Fitkin; and two sons-in-law, Terry
Wagamo and Daniel Shook.

Joe was born July 16, 1929, the son of Marvin and Myrtle Goodall West Sr., in
Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict.

On June 28, 1956, he was united in marriage to [name omitted] in Cedar Rapids.
For 42 years, Joe was a printer for the Cedar Rapids Gazette, retiring in 1991.
He was active in many school activities, including PTA president and member
of Jefferson High School Booster Club. Joe also managed the concession stand
at the Veterans Memorial ball stadium. Joe loved playing softball, bowling
in leagues and working on family genealogy. He also was an avid gardener and
Cubs fan and enjoyed visiting with his many friends from the neighborhood. Joe
was a member of the Printers Union. A memorial fund has been established in memory of Joe.
