John Schuler, the father of Mrs. Janisch, also hailed from Germany, and came to the New Worldat the age of twenty-two years, where he worked out for some time by day and month. After marriage he purchased ten acres of land in Stephenson County, IL. and later, after his removal to Black Hawk Co., this state, bought an eighty-acre tract, on which he was residing at the time of his decease. He was a man who took a great interest in all matters of local importance, and was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In politics he was a Republican, and died when seventy eight years of age. (Above taken from Janisch Biographical record)

John Schuler was born (1) Tuesday 28 February 1804 in Baden, Bavaria, Germany, now Baden Wuerttember. He served as a (2) Cavalryman in Germany prior to coming to the New World at the young age of (3) twenty-two years, approximately 1826. He worked out for some time by the day and month.

Catherine Miller was born (4) Friday 17 February 1817, reared and educated in Baden, Germany and after emigrating to the United States, worked out by the week in Pennsylvania until her marriage to John Schuler. Date of John and Catherine's marriage is June 24, 1840.

Their first son Joseph J. Schuler was born February 15, 1841, their second son George Schuler was born 8 May 1843 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Their third son Joseph Schuler was born on 24 September 1845 in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

In 1848 John moved his family to Buck Eye Township, Stephenson County, Illinois. Per George Schuler's obituary, 6 April 1933, page 6, Mason City Globe Gazette, George was seven years old when he moved to Illinois. This would have been 1850. However, in the 1850 Census for Buck Eye Township Maria (Mary) Schuler, their first daughter, was 2 years old and born 25 August 1845 in Illinois; so they had apparently been living in Illinois in 1848. Joseph's obituary stated he was 3 years old when he moved to Stephenson County Illinois with his parents. This would have been 1848.

Footnotes:

 (1) Date of birth is calculated from Mary Janisch - Portrait and Biographical record. Stated John Schuler was 78 years of age at death on 12 June 1882. This date of birth agrees with ages reported on 1850, 1856, 1860 and 1870 census. The date on John's grave stone in Fairview Cemetery Dunkerton, Iowa states his age 87 years 3 month 15 days which would make his date of birth Saturday 28 February 1795. I believe the 8 and 7 are transposed on the grave.

(2)The fact that John Schuler was in the Cavalry in Germany was based on Joseph Schuler's obituary which stated the reason Joseph joined the cavalry during the Civil War was that his father had been a cavalryman in Germany.

John and Catherine Schuler purchased 9-32/100 acres in the SW 1/4 of Lot 10, Section 16, Buck Eye Township (28), Range 8 East, from Adam and Nancy Geiser for $50. The Warranty Deed # 10388 dated 30 August 1854 and recorded on 16 February 1855 reads as follow: Grantee - John Schuler to Grantor Adam Greiser. Description of premises in Book T page 131 "for $50; SW quarter of Lot 10, East of forth Principal Meridian reference be Adam & Nancy Geiser."

John sold the land to Peter Martin for $300 on 23 October 1854, recorded on 16 February 1855, as Stephenson Co. Warranty Deed # 10389. It reads as follows: John & Catherine Schuler to Peter Martin, 23 October 1854 date sold for $300. Date record in Book S, page 407, 16 February 1855. Description of premises: " It being thru SW 1/4 of Lot 10, Section 16; Buck Eye Township(28), Range 8 east, 9 32/100 acres.

I believe that John may have purchased the land earlier and didn't record the purchase or sale until he was ready to move to Iowa. A map of Buck Eye township dated 1871 still indicated that Peter Martin still owned the land.

Besides Maria (Mary) Schuler two other children were born in Buck Eye Township. Caroline Schuler (daughter) in 1852 and Tillman Schuler (son) in February 1853.

On 23 November 1854 John purchased his first 80 acre section on Camp Creek located in section 24 of Barclay Township(89), Iowa. Sale No. 27469 from Dubuque land office.

On 10 May 1855,(6) the family arrived in Barclay Township, Black Hawk County, Iowa. They made the journey by ox team and covered wagon. The land that John had purchased the year before had been sold at a premium and he had entered another 80 acres in section 6, in the northwest part of the township.

Footnotes:
(3) John's age of 22 when he came to the United States is based on Mary Janisch - Portrait and Biographical records.

(4)The date of Catherine's birth is calculated based on (1) U.S. census records, (2) age on the grave in Fairview Cemetery., Dunkerton, Iowa, (3) Mary Janisch Portrait and Biographical records which stated she died when sixty-seven years of age on 10 October 1883.

(5) Schuler was spelled Shular in the 1850 Census of Buck Eye Township, Stephenson County Illinois.

(6) Date from Joseph Schuler obituary.

This second land purchase was for 75 42/100 acres at $1.25 per acre, amounting to $ 94.27 for the west frl 1/2 of north east quarter of section no. 6 in township No. 89N of Range No. 11W. Recorded in Volume 59 page 57 dated 15 October 1855. See Commissioner of the General Land Office at Dubuque sale No. 31971 dated June 6 1855 on following pages. At this location John built his log cabin.

In the Des Moines, Iowa 1856 Census John, age 52, and family were found in Black Hawk county:

On 15 July 1862 Anna L. Schuler (F) was born to John and Catherine Schuler Barclay Township, Black Hawk County, Iowa. John would have been 57 and Catherine age 44.

John's oldest son George Schuler enlisted 10 July 1862 and Joseph Schuler, the second son, enlisted 20 December 1863. At the end of the Civil War George Schuler mustered out on 27 June 1865 and Joseph Schuler mustered out 8 August 1865. George and Joseph bought a quarter section of land in Lester Township, across the road from John and Catherine (#146) that had been homesteaded by George W. Miller. In 1866 George married Ella Amanda Buchner at Lester Township, Black Hawk County, Iowa. In 1867 Mary (Maria) Schuler married Martin Janisch who had arrived from Germany one year earlier and had purchased three hundred and twenty acres of uncultivated land in Grundy County. In 1870 Joseph married Miss Diana Trumbauer, in Barclay Township. In the 1870 Iowa Census John and Catherine Schuler were still in Barclay Township with Joseph and Diana:
