Documentation and Sources:

Following their marriage they farmed in Washington, Iowa area until they had
birthed 11 children, the last of whom was born in 1886. Sometime in late 1880's the
family moved to a homestead near Redfield, South Dakota. They homesteaded 160
acres and did so on virgin prairie. Their home consisted of a sod built structure which
leaked like crazy when it rained. In the winter the roof leaked when the temperature
went up above freezing or the fire in the fireplace got too hot and warmed the inside
of the hut too much. The family was not very successful trying to farm the 160 acres
and after a few years decided to give up homesteading and moved to Sioux City, Iowa.
According to Aunt Ella Springer (Helen Alta Robertson), this took place in 1890 and the move
was accomplished by covered wagon. Her father gave up South Dakota because of the
grasshoppers and the hot sun.

The Records I have:
Alexander Cowen Robertson's Death certificate.
