Documentation and Sources:

Sources: Wapello County (Iowa) Genealogical Society, Ottumwa Library's genealogical section,
newspaper obituaries, personal visits to graves, Wapello Co. (IA) Courthouse in Ottumwa (birth,
marriage, death, will and land deed records), Iowa Dept. of Public Health (death certificates),
cemetery and funeral records, Iowa State Genealogical Society in Des Moines, and family members,
including my great-grandmother Ethel Hartley Price [1900-1999] and her sister, Edith Hartley
Briggs [1906-2008]. Also, some genealogical email contacts, including Chris Hall (a Reona Hartley
Cockerell descendant) and Nedra (a Cockerell researcher), as well as snail-mail contacts, such as
Dorothy Bryan and Betty Bell, both of Des Moines, Iowa. Also, genealogical websites on the Internet.

(1) Dorcas Hartley Clark's grave gave the deathdate of November 11, 1917, but her funeral/death record
said she died on November 9.

(2) Mary Judson Hartley and Sarah Judson Hartley (wives of Almond L. and Philip Hartley, respectively)
were sisters...being the daughters of Daniel and Caroline [Medlem] Judson. Their sister was Mrs.
Margaret [Judson] Price Hendricks, who was the mother-in-law of Ethel [Hartley] Price. Therefore, I
am descended directly from Almond L. and Mary [Judson] Hartley and from John Price and Margaret
[Judson] Price Hendricks (John Price was her 1st husband) because Almond & Mary's granddaughter,
Ethel Hartley, married John & Margaret's son, Cyrus W. Price.

(3) Ottumwa, Iowa, newspaper obituary in July 1932 showed the fact that Almond Hartley died at the age
of 99 years and that the death certificate showed his birth date as January 1st, 1833, which was filed
by his oldest child, Cerrisa Viola [Hartley] McNerney (known as 'Aunt Sis,' Viola or Mary). But several
census records showed that Almond was born in 1841 and I believe Cerrissa mixed up the birth date of her
father with that of her uncle by marriage....Hiram Clark (husband of Dorcas Hartley) who actually was
born on January 1st, 1833, in Jackson County, Ohio.

(4) For those who want to know more about Reona Hartley Cockerell, here are some basic facts: she and her
husband Daniel Cockerell had married in Wapello County, Iowa, but they moved firstly to Pekin, Illinois, and
then lastly in Danville, Illinois. Daniel Cockerell died on March 27, 1926, at the home of their son, Elzy John
Cockerell. Reona "Rose" Hartley Cockerell died a few years before Daniel's death, according to Nedra, the
Cockerell researcher, via email. Daniel was born in Cambridge, Guernsey Co., Ohio, the son of John and
Elizabeth Cockerell, in 1847, and Nedra said Daniel may be a relation of some sort to Susannah [Cottrell]
Hartley, wife of Philip Hartley. Daniel and Reona had 9 children, but only six grew into adulthood. Daniel
worked in the coal mines in Wapello county, Iowa, and both Pekin and Danville, Illinois. His children also
worked there. Children are as follows: (1) Joseph, who died young; (2) Elzy John; (3) Warren; (4) Ira;
(5) George; (6) Ida, who died before 1920; (7) William Henry; (8) Samuel; and (9) Grace.
