Documentation and Sources:
I have the following records in my possession regarding my great grandfather, John Lafayette Duffee/Duffey/Duffy - apparently he went by the name Lafe but there are records listing him as J. L.Duffee. He is listed in the 1910 Census as Lafayette - whether this was to avoid confusion with his father John G Duffee is unknown.

There are two unnamed newspaper accounts that were copied by the Monroe County Genealogical Society that recount Lafe’s death, both of which list his year of birth incorrectly:

“Lafe Duffey of this place passed away at his home in Fredric. Mr.Duffey has been failing in health of late, but his death came as a shock to his friends. Lafe Duffee, son of John and Margaret Duffee was born in Dudley, IA March 15, 1846 and died at the age of 59 years, 2 months, and 7 days. He leaves to mourn his demise, five sons…”
