Leon Reporter, Leon, Iowa Thursday, January l4, l897 South Line Township, Cedar County, Mo. Jan. lst, l897. Editor Leon Reporter -- As I promised to try to give you a description of the Caves, I will do the best I can under the circumstances, as I am no writer. I can but give your readers a faint idea or description. This Cave is situated seven miles south and one mile west of Stockton, in Cedar County, Missouri, and about l/4 of a mile from the Dade County line, it lies between Crisp and Ascola. This Cave is thirty feet under ground and was discovered about ten years ago, but was not opened until Christmas Day, l896. We have found three rooms so far and think there are several more. From the size of the rooms found, one is about 8xl0 feet square; second room 5x6 round and third room is not as large as the former. They are lined with tiff or what I call formation from lime stone and they found some black jack, rosin jack or some other jack. Later from the recent rains, there is lots of water running through the Cave, but not enough to stop the people from going down to see the great sights that is to be seen. One day there were l5 persons here to see the great Cave and the sight is just wonderful. I have only been in one other cave and that one is in Polk County. That is known as the health cave, my wife and I, and T.T. BECK and wife, of Leon, Iowa, visited it in l894. This has been the nicest winter I ever saw so far, though it is snowing now for the first time this winter. Wheat looks fine, I think we will get some free silver next year on our wheat. I think we are in need of it. So Hurrah for Bryan and free silver. Yours Truly, MR. B.F. KOGER. Copied by Cordelia Suzann |
