Leon Journal-Reporter Leon, Decatur County, Iowa Wednesday, December 02, 2015 Twice Told Tales - 50 Years Ago December 06, 1965 The Leon City Council voted to purchase 11 250-watt mercury vapor lights to replace the lights on Highway 2 between Church and Idaho streets. The Leon Council also passed Ordinance No. 152 which established the annual salary for the mayor at $1,500.00 to be paid in equal monthly installments beginning January 1, 1966. Attending the national NFO convention from Decatur County were Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Tellier and Mr. and Mrs. Faye Brimm of Garden Grove. A record 10,000 delegates from 25 states attended the two-day convention in St. Louis. Floyd Collins was elected as president of the Decatur County Saddle Club for 1966. Other officers were Carl Warrick, Kathy Collins, Harold McClaran and Swede Petty. Prior to the business meeting, the group enjoyed supper at the Little Wonder Cafe in Leon. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Ridgway became the parents of Daniel Richard at the Decatur County Hospital on November 29. He weighed 10 pounds and three 3/4 ounces and was welcomed home by sister Shari. Ron Virden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Virden of Leon sailed December 6 from Port Huenema, CA for Vietnam. A group of men donated their time and equipment to cut wood for the Garden Grove Methodist Church. High individual bowlers at Leon Lanes for the week were: Larry Norris, Marlys Pearcy, George Richmond, Elton Hanthorn, Wendell Plym, Clayton Lane, Joe Boord, Ron Ivins and Horace Wiley.
